Hi all ;D Maddy and I are trying to find something good to use on the main and tail. Brandy has alot of dandruff especially in her main area long the underside of her main againt the coatline. What are some things to use to soften the main and tail and get it under control . Also how do you thin a main out? Thanks for any info.

Hi Amy - I really like the Cowboy Magic products for mane and tails. The detangler is non-drying and works really well, but I've never tried it for dandruff.
As for thinning - the best way is the old standby of pulling the mane. Some horses object to having their manes pulled, and there mane-thinning combs which I have tried with varying success. You can also use regular thinning shears, but if you use anything that cuts the mane rather than pulls it out, to try and cut it as close to the root as possible if you plan to braid.
Being that Brandy is a pony, she may not mind having her mane pulled (thicker skin than some of the thin-skinned TBs I work with). To pull a mane and also make it shorter, you hold on to a small amount of the longest hairs in a section of mane, then backcomb with a comb until you are only holding a few strands of hair, then pull them out in a quick motion. Its a slow process to pull a mane as you should only be pulling out 5-10 hairs a time. You just continue along the whole mane in this manner focusing always on the longest hairs and keeping the mane even as you go until you get to the desired thickness/length.
If you want to maintain length but just make it thinner (and don't plan to braid), thinning shears you get from a beauty supply store may work best.

Thanks for the info You mean you pull out the hair? WOW doesn't that hurt? She won't hold a grudge or anything? Do you leave the Cowboy Magic products in? Or do you need water etc....? as Maddy wants to find something that you can apply and not need the hose We started putting on the Hooves product. It looks real nice, but we can't tell if it's doing anything spectacular or not But it sure does look good ;D

Most horses don't really have many nerves in their manes so it doesn't hurt, but a few are bothered by it and will let you know. You can leave the Cowboy Magic Detangler on. They probably have a conditioner also, although I have never tried it.

Well, I still use good old Head and Shoulders on my gelding, and it works great too. I use it on his whole body (not his head, of course). I rub it in to his mane thoroughly and let it sit for a few minutes, and then rinse. Presto, no flakes!

Love the cowboy magic for conditioning, but our arab had horrible dandruff issues too. I used MTG - just a couple of treatments at it was gone!
