My mare Indy has an almost bald white face the burns very easy. Her fly mask covers the upper portion of her face but not her muzzle and she burns every summer. I tried putting human sunscreen on her but it does not last all day and I am not able to reapply it during the day. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to protect her muzzle from sunburns?

I looked at them but where she is burning is farther down her nose.

Try aloe vera gel, or a smidgen of diaper rash ointment w/ zinc. Also make sure you don't have plants in your pasture that can cause photosensitivity. You should be able to google a list of plants that can cause sun sensitivity in horses. Good luck! ;D

I have one of the big fly masks and it goes down far enough...the key maybe is to get the right brand and/or size? Maybe a slightly larger one will be longer in the nose. Vanna has the same problem...unfortunately though she refuses to keep her fly mask on either.

In the catalog it shows that it only comes down to the nostrils......I think you are right and maybe if I buy one a little bigger it will go down far enough like the one Crafty is wearing.

What about the zinc oxide stuff that lifeguards use?

I have heard good things about zinc for sunburns. In addition, if you do get the colors, there is the added benefit of knowing when it isn't on any longer.

when my bald faced paint got a REALLY bad sunburn, I mixed straight aloe vera gel and a high sunblock like 30 to 40 SPF. It got rid of the sunburn while protecting against further burn. now I just put sunblock on his nose and he hasnt been burned in nearly 3 years. and its around 98-105° here
