I didn't realize until recently how many people remembered this beautiful girl, but since they do, I would like to share her final chapter.
Since this is an in memory thread, I would prefer to not discuss her past other than that she was at one time a CBEr horse. If you would like details, please PM me.
Ember came into my life two months ago. I originally took her on with plans to rehome her, but after just a few days I realized how deep her emotional scars were and knew she would have a forever home with me. Sure, I bounced around options for her, but I was just kidding myself.
Unfortunately, I had no idea how little time we would have.
Ember (whom I renamed Amber in hopes of giving her a new start in life) had two very serious issues.
One was a severe old hip injury that resulted in a stiff gait and, upon vet evaluation, chronic pain. Her hip joint was always hot and she was missing a great deal of muscle. The vet felt that she had broken off the point of her hip and then had surgery to remove the chunk of bone that was displaced. Her hip was constantly hot and probably unstable.
The second issue popped up when she came into heat. I have never seen a mare so violently uncomfortable. She would throw herself on the ground and yesterday kicked three holes in the barn wall. She would throw herself against the wall, resulting in cuts and swelling from her hip down. Hormones, bute and banamine didn't help her at all. She would go from running into her stall full blast at feeding time to not eating at all during both heat cycles that I had her for.
So, after evaluating both of her issues and with a heavy heart, I decided to have her euthanized today. She got as much love and treats in the last two months as any girl could ever hope for. I was truly lucky to have had her in my life and will always be thankful that she loved me back.
I planted a rose in her memory today. For those of you with redheads, please give them an extra hug for me.
RIP sweet girl.
You can see the area under the scar that's darker where she's missing muscle, it's all scar tissue.
