I posted the full story on the blog so I'll let you read it there. She was an amazing horse - one of those tough as nails mares who never slowed down. She was running in the pasture last night, and just laid down and went to sleep sometime in the night. fuglyhorseoftheday.blogspot.com/2007/12/rip-lacy-1979-2007.html

I read your blog earlier about Lacy. You know what? I think it's a blessing for a horse (or a person) to die that way. No pain, no fear, no long period of heavens knows what kind of treatments........ and for you, no agonizing or hand-wringing over "is it the right time, is it too soon, if I wait will I wait too long." She had, ultimately, a good death, I think. A gift. And you surely did do right by her. But I am so very sorry for your loss. Mary

Wow, Cat. She was beautiful. Your tribute to her was perfect, and you are right: You might deeply regret the alternative. My last horse died the same way. It is hard not to be able to say goodbye.

Cathy, I am sorry to hear about the passing of Lacy. She could not of asked for a better owner. Don't worry about not seeing her one last time. Like you said, she was a horse was in hog, err, horsey heaven already where she lived. Going like she did is the best way to go. No chance to think if you are doing the right thing at the right time. She made the decision for you. Laurie

Hi Cathy,
I'm so very sorry to hear about Lacy. Wish they could all have owners like you and go peacefully in their sleep though. How can anyone ask for anything better for one of their favorite horses. My sincere condolences.

Cat, words escape me - I am sorry - but I am so happy for Lacy that she got the best horsey life ever. I've often thought about that retirement farm...I still have it book marked.
And, if you ever write a book - I will buy a copy for sure. No one can write like you can. You are amazing.

I can't say anything but I'm sorry... losing a family member, 2 or 4-legged, is never easy.

I am sorry to hear of your loss. She did have the best life...and the best death an owner can hope for. What a wonderful place that is. Just curious, how much does it cost to board there?

I am paying $295/month per horse plus paypal fees but I think it has gone up a bit since I started boarding there. I think she has been nice and left me at my start rate because she likes my girls. Totally money well spent...the care is unbelievable. They can tell you the nutritional content of the grass, they have it analyzed. They have the BEST farrier, the BEST vets, the absolute best of everything. Lacy's feet went from chronic abcesses and scary "typical TB" soles to absolute perfection in the last year. She went from being a hard keeper to looking fantastic, like she was young again. The lady who runs it used to be a CEO, and that is how she runs it - like a business that is offering the ultimate to those who are willing to pay for it. If it rains, she runs out and puts on their rain sheets. Every morning she goes out mid-morning and feeds treats. If they are lying down, they don't have to get up - she brings the treats to them. I got regular videos of my girls so I could see exactly how they were looking and moving. I mean, seriously, how can you put a price on that? I would have paid double.

$295??? Wow. That is an amazing price for that kind of care. A friend of mine boards her Morgan in Redmond (WA) and pays $650/month. Her mare gets good care, stall at night, turnout every day, 2xday stall cleanings, 2xday feedings, but Susan pays for farrier, goes and exercises her every day, etc. But Magic sure doesn't receive the kind of care you describe. How wonderful for Lacy to have enjoyed that. Mary

My condolences, too. You gave her a great life, and are a great example of what a true horseperson *should* do for our 4-legged friends.
