OK here's what's funny. I found the former owner and she SWEARS he is a running bred QH. ?? I guess anything is possible. She is getting me more info and his registered name. He is well broke though, and sound, and really does not need much rehab to be ready for adoption. He is getting his teeth power floated on Thursday and a once-over from the vet, and then all he needs to be is gelded but I am waiting to find out reg. name just in case he's worthwhile as a stallion. I am guessing I will be having the vet back out to snip him very soon, but you never do know.

Isn't there a way to verify him through bloodwork?

I'm very curious to see how his pedigree reads. Years ago my family was involved in rescuing a QH stallion who conformationally was very similar to Mister. The angles in the shoulder and hip areas were almost identical. That poor stallion was even more underweight than Mister. That stallion's sire was Impressive Zippo and his maternal side was all running bred. For instance his dam's maternal grandsire was Joak.
That poor thing had been owned by an older man who had developed Alzheimer's I believe it was. He could not remember to feed them regularly and had not let them out of the barn in years apparently. If I remember the chain of events that we were told correctly the neighbors finally managed to contact the daughter who came home from out of state and was horrified at the condition of everything. She started working immediately to get the issues addressed.
modified to add that we were lucky in that that particular stallion had his DNA on file so he could be verified against it.

Well, I know he is Impressive bred because they knew he was HYPP negative and that would not even be a consideration if he were not.
I am dying to hear...former owner has not responded yet. I would hate to think this is the poor thing's second rescue!

I would hate to think this is the poor thing's second rescue! I know it isn't the stallion we rescued. He was a bay My sister also has kept track of him. I believe he is currently in Kentucky or Tennessee. I have it written down somewhere. I unfortunately don't have a picture of him it appears or I could put him up so people could see how similar their bone structure is. I am very interested to see how similar their breeding is though.

So any better idea from the former owner how old he is?

I had his teeth power floated yesterday and the vet said 22, which comports with what the former owner told me. She still doesn't know his registered name but swears she will go through her old horse paperwork for me next week.
My vet suggested we give him a few weeks to fatten up and stabilize before we geld him so I am going with her recommendation. I am probably going to try to get him hauled over where there is some kind of place to ride before we even do that, and evaluate him a bit under saddle. He will be available for adoption as soon as he's gelded and/or he could go home prior to that with the gelding appointment already set up with an approved vet.
My understanding is he's well broke but I will ride him and see. Former owner said he hadn't been ridden since age 4 until the Hotchkisses got him, so if he rode well after 18 years, that says a lot about him.
He's easy to handle. No vices, clean legged, good feet. I groom him loose in the stall and he behaves perfectly. Ties and loads fine, haven't tried clipping yet but I will. No really studdy behaviors - he screamed and yelled once and I got after him and he figured out quickly that was not tolerated here and has been perfect ever since. The horse is not stupid, not at all. Whoever originally trained him did a good job.

New pics (crappy camera phone pics, but pics!). This is only 8 days since we got them so I'm really pleased at how much they've both picked up already! I don't have a great place to work horses here but I did play with Mister a bit today and he definitely longes, it's just been awhile. I almost tacked him up and got on him today but no one else was around and I try not to do crazy stuff like that anymore. I bet he will be fine, though. Another shot of Mister: Look, he's growing back a butt! Miss Kittie is hilarious; she has had her head in a round bale for the last 24 hours or more. The other horses take breaks. She is not sure that is a good idea. She fears it may disappear and she thinks it is like, the best thing ever. She is still romping all over with the weanlings, and now that she feels good, I can see she needs a refresher course in ground manners! But when they have been this debilitated, it is almost good to see that pushy nonsense come out again. We can always re-train; it just makes me happy she feels good enough to be pushy! I was also pleased to see she has stopped rubbing out her tail (thank you, dewormer). She has further to go than Mister but she is young and eating like a Hoover so she will get there.

Now, that Mister is getting his big butt back, he might turn out to look like a running QH?

I'm new to this forum, Cat sent me the link~ because I wanted to learn more about Pie and Isabella.
My room-mate and I had the unfortunate job of living on this 'ranch' with Pie, Bella (Isabella), Kittie, and Mister.
We just wanted to thank all of you from the bottom of our hearts for the support and kindess you have sent out to the horses than we fell deeply in love with.
We were in the 'ranch hands' at this place and it was nothing shy of hell. It was simply heartbreaking that we constantly had to beg the owners for food and care for all the horses.
We are really overwhelmed with the love you all have for Pie, Bella, Mister and Kitty.
We miss Pies sense of humor~ he cracked us up constantly~ he is always up to some kind of shenanigans~ Bella's soft forehead that I loved to rest my head upon~ and her love for fruit cups. Kitty is the best snuggler. Before she left I just hugged her for well over 20 minutes~ I just couldn't let go~ and she would glance back at me like she understood. Mister~ so royal. I love the looks on his face when I would sing bad country songs to him while I was filling his water~ which he loves to tip over and over!
We just can't thank you all enough. It means the world to us. This ranch hand job has been the worst ever~ so hearing these great stories of our babies getting what they need is very helpful.
So, from my roomy and I~ thank you.

Awesome - so I can sing badly along with the barn radio and Mister will feel right at home! I'll remember that.

I played with Kitty today - her former owner was right, she has had plenty of ground work. She longes VERY well. She is going to be easy to start. I'd say she's about a 3 or 3.5 now. She's done very well gaining weight but still needs another 200 pounds to look like the halter type Quarter Horse she is supposed to look like! Her coat has improved amazingly but there are still some bald spots. No crusties or pus anymore, but areas where the hair hasn't grown back. We have decided to place her, so if anyone is interested in a cute sorrel registered AQHA mare (ALL papers are in order, transfer signed, NO hassles) who is young, sound and quiet and ready to start, PM me. We will consider gift contract to the right home. I would also throw 30 days of riding on this mare for board plus $100, if desired.

Kittie has been adopted by Penny Gill and will be trained as a 4-H show horse.
Mister is still available, but I have several people who may be interested so hopefully he will have a great new home soon!
