As I was driving past a local stable, I noticed a small sign with a website address on it. When I got home, I typed in the address and checked out the website. Now I admit that I've been out of the loop so I did pick up some books regarding the digestive system and supplements and whatnot and I've been spending some extra time just doing a little additional research and brushing up each night because the area that I had a horse was a different climate than the Northwest and I was young and I'm just a big fan of tutorials. I know that in the years that I've been out of the horse world organics and natural solutions have become more common but....well honestly I'm looking for your frank opinions as experienced horse people on this persons methods and claims. Thank you! completehorsesense.com/

I would be extremely suspicious of anything touted as Do It Yourself in the horseworld. That goes from training a baby to tending a colic. There are some things you just CANNOT learn from a book or a DVD. Every horse is different. Get in with a good trainer, a good vet and a good farrier, read everything you can and take it with a grain of salt. Nothing is really the bible in the horseworld.

Lots of red flags for me there- starting with: "WHAT IF.. changing and implementing a few simple techniques could remove the threat of every fear you ever had AND give you peace of mind with your horse?" Another red flag: no credentials. Also... I'm not sure how to articulate this but there is also a lack of "theory" information on his site. Where does he come up with this stuff? What makese him think any of it's true? It's a huge red flag to post a bunch of answers without "showing his work", so to speak. On the other hand... nwesc is offering a FREE educational series. The next one is coming up this saturday. I haven't been to one yet but I'd be willing to be there will be all kinds of great/useful info included. Last month included info on nutrition, chiro, acupuncture, etc. This month the topic is holistic health care and equince facilitated psycho therapy (plus a play day, at the beautiful traumhoff stables facility). www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=144469602238541#!/posted.php?id=1843581243

Good catch, Val. Teh Google is our friend! (You are kind and diplomatic - when I read that post I was appalled) Agree with what's already been said, and highly recommend attending NWESC's series. In the Portland area, Pacific Crest Sporthorse (my vets) offered classes, too. To learn AND to do right by your horse - turn to professionals with good reputations and solid credentials. [And Pony Club manuals! No joke, those are great no matter your age] That is not to say that alternative/holistic modalities aren't useful or valid but it's a common sensekind of thing. When life (or future soundness) is in question, it's best to turn to science/allopathic methods first. In my experience, modalities backed up with well-designed studies and perhaps peer-reviewed articles are TOTALLY preferable to some anonymous yahoo's opinion. (and not to be snarky, but if you're going to criticize an entire industry for not knowing about a disease/syndrome, you should be able to SPELL it correctly) I have a pretty open mind, and use some woo-woo stuff on my gelding, but you won't find me solely using red light therapy, for example, on a horrible knee laceration- not until my allopathic vets see it first, stitch it up and start a course of antibiotics.

Thank you everybody for confirming my suspicions. To clarify, I do have an excellent trainer and was planning on asking her today if she heard of the guy. I was a little stunned by some of his claims and wanted to make sure that I wasn't off track. I'm not just getting my learnin' from books and the internets. That being said, I appreciate all of you as a handy dandy resource and will probably be asking lots of questions as I go because all of you offer a wealth of knowledge and I like to bounce things off of people that know more than me. And I will definitely be checking out the NWESC series. ;D Thank you!
