SAFE Supporter/ HeARTist Amanda Koh just forwarded this article. I've been saying it for years...how can you slaughter a horse for human consumption when you know for a fact it's had treatments clearly labeled "Not for Livestock Intended For Human Consumption" I HOPE this all goes through!!! www.animallawcoalition.com/horse-slaughter/article/1006

I always wondered about this.
Anyone who eats horse meat deserves to get weird diseases anyways :x

Thanks for sharing this article.
Leahlady, I can agree. One thing to think about though is the possibility of this horse meat being put in other products without people even being aware that they might be eating horse.
While I'm posting, let me reccomend a good movie called "The Cove". It's about dolphins being slaughtered in Japan and the meat is very poisonous- loaded with mercury- and people are eating it without even knowing it's in other fish products. It got me thinking this could happen with horse meat in other countries as well.

Thank you for posting this, Coconut. These regs offer some real hope for the new year that horse slaughter will not be profitable and consequently not a desirable business for the kill buyers. And Mexico's export plants are included! Thank goodness.
Since many auction horses have no history available, it seems it would be the exception that a horse could go straight to slaughter. Makes it difficult to fill the damn trailer...
I hope that breeding of horses is limited for several years so that we can deal with the unwanted horses before adding to the population. Some breeders have reduced their 'output' voluntarily because the market is so soft. I would love to hear anyone's ideas on how to put a temporary ban on, and ultimately control horse reproduction.

From what I can tell, there is a mass over-population of Arabs, Quarters and Paints. Every other ad on CL is for a Paint or a QH, with Arabs and the occasional OTTB sprinkled in. The only folks that seem to keep pumping out foals are the ones dumping them on CL for free or little more.
The high-end breeders of those breeds have indeed cut their numbers, but the low-end offers a never ending supply. And unfortunatley that means more low end HQ, Paints and Arabs than high end. The auction reports illustrate it well.

Don't forget the TBs. There have been a plethora of Tbs as well. From BYB to OTTBs.
Oh, and Appies.
Most of all though...this-cross and that-cross. All over the place. And none with any papers or credentials of course.

Anyone know anything about the "iodine peanut oil" injections along the spine and cocaine- as mentioned in the article?

I know this may sound really bad but I would like to know what the current price per pound is for a slaughter horse?
The reason I am asking is that I would like to be able to get one or 2 of them before they are trucked and would like to be able to buy them for a little more than market price. I see no reason for any of these horses to be treated this way. I have been around them all my life and love them very much mine just passed away not long ago. I was looking for a new prospect on craigslist and found a few horses that are very young that may be exactly what i am looking for. I just want to make sure that I can get the horses instead of having to see them take their last ride. I think I would lose it I can't imagine knowing anyone who could kill such a magnificent animal and then go home and sleep at night!!!!!!!
