it's up to us what rules we want to go by, Generally speaking we lean towards rules that are kindest to the horses, therefore we allow snaffle bits in the western classes. But since I know absolutely nothing about western riding, I could use your help defining this, since a lot of people are asking.

I'd be interested in what the rules are for riding in a bosel. I can direct or indirect rein but just wanted to know what the rule is there. Do you have to direct rein using a bosel in a WP class or does it matter?

Generally, the rules are that jr. horses can be shown in a snaffle or bosal, with two hands and horses 5 or older (it might be 4) have to be ridden in one hand. Someday, I hope they get away from that rule, but that's how I remember it.
Kathleen, I think they prefer you direct rein with a bosal.

Sounds like we would be within the rules then seeing how she is only 4. Thanks!

Yes, technically the rule is: 4 and younger, two hands and a ring snaffle or bosal. 5 and older, shank bit and they neck rein. If SAFE wants to make an exception and allow older horses to go in a snaffle and two hands, that should definitely be noted on the show bill (is it?) so that exhibitors are aware of that. Otherwise, they are going to be upset if someone else shows two handed on an older horse and they don't know they are also allowed to do it. It is much easier to keep that head where it belongs with two hands!

Many of them are still going to be in some stage of retraining regardless of age. My rescue mare, in her 20s, was broke but didn't have much refinement in her cues when I got her so I mainly ride her direct rein in a snaffle but I will work on the neck reining with a curb now that I know. Thanks all for helping me with this dilemma.

If the show isn't "rated" or sanctioned then the rules can be set by the show itself I think. I rode Buena at the first SAFE show in a snaffle and she was 5. I have always thought that the bit requirements were a tad crazy anyway. This is a relaxed and fun show, so the more lenient the rules are, the more fun the participants will have. And the number of participants may very well be higher if the rules are set up as such.

I agree with Liz. We want the rules to benefit the horses, so we will allow two hands and a ring snaffle or bosal for all horses regardless of age.
I will amend the rules sheet to reflect this. Thank you for your help!

In trails, I've had people ride through with just a halter on. I also use obstacles that aren't "sanctioned" (but we all love Billy Bob and Ralph!).
I've also never had anyone complain about my course. In fact, I get plenty of compliments on it ;D

Lots of talk about our show in the Graham area! I think we'll have a record number of entrants. Just one week!

11 SAFE / ADOPT ME sashes are ready for SAFE Horses who will be going to the show!!!
(one says ADOPT ME with a backwards E....I'm still trying to figure out how I can fix that...but if you're dyslexic this could be the horse for you!)
This is the largest showing of SAFE horses in recorded history (ok 2 years!) and I'd like to thank everyone who's volunteering to train, haul, groom, handle and show SAFE horses. I think it will give them a huge opportunity to be seen and hopefully help find them their forever homes.
I am so excited!! I keep getting calls from people with show questions tonite...I wish it were tomorrow...except for the part that I'm not packed and ready yet! ;D
