OMG! What a tragedy... but it doesn't look like they were pitts, just a group of random mutts. Does anyone know how old the foals are? Will they be able to make it?

"The foals suffered puncture wounds to their legs. They were treated and are expected to recover, Clark said."

Just saw the mares/foal photos on Serenity's website. It looks like they could use some help with the vet expenses for these guys...

I'm saddened and horrified.
Patricia, the Serenity folks/volunteers and the horses have my deepest sympathy.

Just saw the mares/foal photos on Serenity's website. It looks like they could use some help with the vet expenses for these guys... Send the bill to the dogs owner. They should pick up ALL the costs involved with AC's involvement and SERR's costs/damages. I have Zero tolerance for this crud.

I am sickened and heartbroken over this story! I just spent time earlier this week reviewing this rescue's website and thinking what nice horses these mares were. After reading the article I also read some of the comments posted, most of which I agreed with. These neighbors should never have owned these dogs and deserve to not only pay every penny to the rescue to cover the costs of the vet bills, but should also face some stiff penalties in a court of law. What if those animals had attacked a child?! I don't agree with some of the comments posted though. It shouldn't be neccessary to have to go get a gun and shoot your neighbors dogs to protect your horses. The people who blame the owner of these dogs are 100% correct.

I worry about the two foals. losing the mothers will be horrible for them.
I would like to know which mares they were. I used to help out there but saddly I stopped. I might just start going again because they well need more help now that they have to care for the foals now too.
And one of the worst things about this is that they killed the dogs. It was not there faults.dogs are relatives to wovles so when they must, or when they're raised that why, they go into wolf mode and that's what wolves to. They hunt. I don't blame the dogs.

And I just saw it on the news, but they didn't show either the horses or the dogs. They did show some of the other horses though including what looked like a lovely young Freisian. That must be Dante. He's quite a beauty. Has a tough little personality though, but a sweet horse.

Turns out the dogs were not pitbulls, but some kind of mixed breed with wirehair (at least the large dogs. There were also small dogs). It was not a death by mauling but a chasing incident where the mares were run through barbed wire fence, thus necessitating the euthanasia.
King 5 needed to take a breath and do a bit of fact checking before publishing that article. At least I can edit easier than they can!
My understanding is one mare was a Paint, an auction rescue that came pregnant. The other was a personal broodmare of Patricia's.

The horses were mauled and ran throu the fence both contributed to their death. They both were crippled mares that were on high meds to keep them comfortable while they were with their foals. They were forced to fight so hard I can imagine they were in horrible pain. The arab was not Patricia's mare she came from a breeder. One of the babies has bite wounds. These mares were not able to run and had to to try to get away. This was an ongoing problem and the neighbors usual retort was " F off ". They were pitbulls mixed with chihuaha. Mom was a full pit. I know personally of someone who was chased into her vehicle by these dogs so she got up close and personal. They were allowed to keep the litter of 7 puppies and they had an add on CL. Sounds to me they were looking to feed babies and acted in pack mentality. I don't care the breed not their fault. These people did not care and I hope to God they suffer for this. I know Patricia is. These mares had allready been failed by people so many times and were finally enjoying raising their babies safely.... so much for that. There is no one at fault here but the owners pure and simple.

If you go to the serenity website, it says the 2 mares are Kiara, a bay arabian and Kat a paint mare.
