Hope is one of 10 horses seized from a Carnation farm on Saturday, February 23rd, 6 of which were taken in by SAFE. This beautiful, strikingly-marked Saddlebred mare has a Body Condition Score of 2 on a scale of 1-9. There was no food on the property anywhere and no water in the pasture where she was living with 5 other horses, along with the bodies of two dead horses. In addition to being extremely emaciated, Hope is suffering from a massive lice infestation, rainrot and hoof neglect. She also has a huge parasite infestation - so much so that her manure, which is mainly diarrhea right now, is writhing with worms. Our main concern with Hope right now is the parasite overload, as she is the one that is shedding them the most, and her slightly depressed demeanor. Unlike her pasture-mate Willow and Willow's 4 month old filly, Lily, she is slow to eat her small, frequent meals. We are keeping a close watch on Hope, along with all the rest. Here are some photos of Hope, taken the day after their arrival at SAFE:

She has the look of a horse who's been let down one too many times... I'll bet she's going to look phenomenal once she's recovered. Best of luck Hope! You're in good hands now!

She's probably afraid this is a dream from which she will wake up in that hell hole. I wonder if she lost a baby or a close friend there. Maybe she had a person she loved before she ended up there. Who knows, but she will get better. Pam

Hope is doing well today. When I took her blanket off today for a photo shoot with Seattle Times, she was covered in lice as big as fleas. I had no idea that lice could get that big! It was literally the grossest thing I have ever seen. Thankfully, Hope along with the rest of them got their first lice dusting today, so by tomorrow they should be feeling much better. I believe Hope's infestation was the worst of the bunch..she has been so itchy and rubbing herself on everything. I hope she is feeling much better by tomorrow when they start dying.

When you worm with ivermectin, doesn't that help kill lice also. I have always heard that it does. But just because someone told me that, does not especially make it true.

I believe Hannah told me there are two kinds of lice, and Ivermectin works with one kind, and works with the eggs that get ingested. So yes, it will help, but the dusting is still necessary to kill the lice on the skin. In another 4 or 5 days we will be able to start worming them with a half dose of Ivermectin, but we have to stagger things and not hit them with too much at once.

The best lice buster I have found is olive oil and Tea tree oil ( like a 10-1 ratio) and just pour it on thick... it suffocates them but it is not so yucky and toxic as the lice duster...

You know, through the starvation and neglect, it looks like Hope is going to be a very pretty girl once she's healthy again. Does she show any signs of having a foal pulled off her recently? It seems this lady had a fascination with breeding
