The work party for Sunday is cancelled, because we got everything done today that we could get done! We put an entire 12 yards of gravel in the paddocks which will help a lot, as we simply did not put enough down when we put the paddocks in and there were spots where the bare fabric was showing. We also laid down stall mats in the back part of the shelters (we had only put mats in the front of the shelters, so now the entire shelters are matted. Everything looks much better!!!!
It was wet, muddy, backbreaking work, so THANK YOU to the volunteers that showed - Betsey, Sky, Delores (aka "DJ", our amazing 82-year old volunteer!), Brett and Tracie, Anita and her niece Sarah. You were all wonderful!!! And of course Mike for his help with the tractor and moving the mats.

A little sore this morning but a good sore It was wonderful meeting everyone and I had fun - call me crazy but I didn't notice the rain or the work so much with such a great group of people. And I want to be like DJ when I'm 82! More than happy to help - anytime.

Learning2Dance called me earlier this evening and I advised to have her friend call AC & if there is immediate safety concerns to call the Sheriff tonite. Apparently the Stallion broke down the fence AND has already had his way with her mare I also suggested that if the Stallion can't be contained easily this evening to get the mare & any other at-risk horse (that I assume the owner CAN handle) out of there temporarily until AC can get out tomorrow. But as I understand it, the Stallion broke through on Monday night & has been running havoc ever since. Since I'm not the expert on this issue, I know L2D and her friend could use any advice they can get. I also thought that since this neighbor passed away, his estate/next-of-kin should be/needs to take responsibility for the stallion and the damage he caused so a call to the Kitsap Sheriff to have a report taken might help them later, even if they can't take care of the stallion issue tonite. ...and I'm only going to guess that if this stallion is dangerous, the Sheriff is going to do something immediately to defuse that situation (and I'm cringing to think to what extent that might be) but if he's not causing more damage and the mare's owner is willing to keep him overnight then AC can be called in to pick up the horse tomorrow, right? ...like I said...*I* am totally not the expert in this but my set answer to most issues that involve abandoned, neglected or abused horses is to get the authorities involved.

I agree Jet with all the suggestions you have made. I will be interested to know how this is handled by AC and the sheriff. I wish we could help beyond advice, but our resources are tapped, and we are not set up for stallions (my property being full of mares in heat at the moment).

update from late last night on the stallion. She did call humane society ( I don't know if that and AC are one in the same?) and they are full.
She has the stallion in a pasture now so he is fenced in and she is feeding him. Unfortunately there is no shelter in that field, but at least he has food. He does need a home, she is in no position to keep him.
Can anyone do anything?

I'd still make a call to Kitsap Sheriff to have a report taken on the damage. It could be that the family has information on him but just doesn't know what to do with him so left him where they thought he was safe. They need to know he's NOT safe!
Is there any information on the Stallion...age/breed/color/training? If, by chance, he's registered he may have some options for someone who's willing to take him and make him 'right'
I'm going to assume the friend knew the neighbor & possibly has contacts for the family. At the very least, the Sheriff should be able to contact the family through estate information and someone needs to make a decision & own up to the damage.
maybe today someone with Stallion experience will read this and offer a better solution.
MY solutions starts with a call to a vet & some much needed brain surgery.... just what we need fully equipped stallions roaming the countryside.

How many horses are involved here? Is the mare he bred one of them? We also don't need foals by mystery stallions, so is the mare getting lutalyse? Maybe that's something we can help with, if it hasn't already been done.
If someone wants to PM me the address the horses came off of, I can probably find out some information as to who owns the property. That stuff is all online. We need to find out who legally owns the horses before any action is taken.
I assume if someone got him into a pasture that he's not totally rank and unmanageable. Is the pasture fairly secure, i.e. he's not out on just hot tape? Otherwise I'd try to find someone who has a round pen who will take him for a few days until you can figure out who owns him. A round pen usually makes a perfectly good temporary stallion pen. Put a waterproof blanket on him and I wouldn't worry too much about him being out in the rain - he may not be happy but he'll live.

Thanks for the reply Cat67. update-people buying the property sound willing to take on the horses. The stallion is the abandoned horse, and the mare is my friends horse. She is feeding him. The question I didn't think to ask her is whether the potential new owners know how to take care of a horse. If they are willing to keep the horse is there a safe volunteer who could mentor them on proper care?

I would be happy to go out and evaluate the horse's training and condition and help them with arranging for gelding to be done. Just PM me.
Make sure your friend gets the vet out ASAP and gets the mare a lutalyse shot. That prevents pregnancy and you want to do that immediately. The last thing your friend needs is an "oops" foal.
