Hi, I'm having trouble with deworming lately. Has anyone used one of the worming bits? If so, do you recommend using one or do you have any other ideas to help? I have trouble with: 1) getting the paste in their mouths and 2) getting my mare to actually swallow the paste. She will stand there (last time for about 10 minutes) with the paste in her mouth until I let her drop her head and will then start flinging it out of her mouth. Is there a way to get a horse to swallow (like giving a cat a pill? )? I wish one of the pharmaceutical manufacturers would bring back the ivermectin crumbles that you feed on top of grain!

FYI - you can mix the paste into some feed without a problem this is the ONLY time I condone mixing something tasty along with some apple sauce or molasses, whatever your horse likes. Use a SMALL amount - couple of handfuls of sweet feed, senior feed, whatever. mix the paste wormer in so that there is enough feed to mask the taste - AND add some molasses or whatever else your kid likes. FEED ONLY THIS - and feed it when your kid is hungry Works well on those that won't let you deworm. the deworming bits do work great My suggestion is this - they figure out what that bit is for and can get a bit nutty once they do. Put something tasty on the outside of the bit before putting it in the mouth. THEN, the first syring into the mouth should be something good - my old QH loves diet cherry coke - so will put about 10-12 CCs of that in his mouth, THEN shoot the dewormer in once he has swolled the coke Hope that helps! I've got one of those (horse) types that won't swallow for the better part of two hours after pasting him. The poor guy just stands there, won't eat, won't drink and eventually slobbers are drooling all over. It's sad to watch. This has been going on for years and I finally gave up and put him on daily pellet wormer (he scarfs that down). It's a bit more expensive, but I just can't stand to see those bubbles any longer. winterlakesfarm.. You have a PM.

I actually have a worming bit and it works great in my opinion. In fact I used it on a horse I don't know well recently who had freaked when she saw the applicator coming near her face so I ran and got the bit that I use on Coconut every time now and once you get it though the tube and into their mouth they seem to decide it's pretty tasty afterall.
The bit is in a deep V pointing towards the back of the mouth so when you add the wormer it shoots to the back of their mouth.
When I had to do the power pack on Coconut I was afraid she would equate the bit to some horrible taste but the second day & every day after (and since) she's been great. I have to assume it's tastes ok or it gets it back away from their taste buds!?
I ordered mine online from Drs Smith & Foster via iGive.com and earned some money for SAFE too ;D
