Well I was really hoping we would make it through this unscathed, but sadly it is not the case. The first to go were the gutters off the new Noble shelters. Unfortunately, we put the shelters too close to the arena, and snow falling off the arena fell right on the backside of the shelters pulling the gutters right off. By this afternoon, the roofing in the Noble shelters was beginning to buckle from the large quantities of heavy snow that was falling on it, and by this evening, the roofs of one of the shelters has completely collapsed. The rest were too dangerous to keep horses in, so the horses have been moved out. The arena gutters are ruined on that side as well, and one of the support beams has cracked as well. The good news is most of the snow off the arena is gone, its just the bottom of the west side that still has snow on it. We did lose the Costco carport that I was using as hay storage as well. The babies are in the arena tonight (we looked it over, despite the damage it should be safe) and Little Miss and Cedar are sharing a paddock with the one of the old shelters, with the two PHH mares in the other and then Slam, Vanna and Krabask in stalls. My stalls are doing just fine, they are very well built with lots of cross supports. Ironically, the old shelters with the flatter roofs that are attached to the old chicken coop are doing just fine...the snow is all gone now so there is no risk of collapse. I guess there is a reason they are still there, they have already withstood many, many tough winters. Mostly because the way they are angled to the wind most of the snow gets blown away. I am calling my insurance tomorrow - they should be able to cover the arena damage. Not sure about the Noble shelters and we'll have to buy a new Costco hay shelter (and move it further away from the arena). We are going to have to work quickly to get the repairs up as I don't have enough shelter for the horses here. I am so ready for 2008 to be over.

ARGH! That's horrible I'm glad you have a roof still...I saw those images on the news this weekend of the collapsed arena roofs. How awful for those facilities! So we've got some work to do eh? Keep us posted on when/what needs to be done and you know I'll do my best to get folks out there. I've already received emails from a couple of volunteers just to let me know they are FREE this week So it looks like I won't have to do A LOT of begging to get folks out once we know what needs to be done. Hang in there Jaime! 08 is almost over.....

Belhan barns are very nice- my sister had the same 4 stall kit at her old house. But there were drawbacks so I'm not sure she would get one again as it took so long to finish it she never got to use it. - Roof has to be custom built. Materials alone were very expensive as it required a slanted, metal roof. There was no kit available. - Has to use custom cut slotted tongue & groove wood. Also not cheap & was labor intensive. - Needs to be set up on a 100% lazer flat surface. Pouring a cement foundation was the only thing that could set this barn up correctly without serious issues. The labor alone on this barn was enormous- she even hired one of the managers at Reeber Ranch to help.

If your insurance doesn't cover the shelters, then maybe this will?
------------ Cross-post ================
Assistance available to residents and businesses with storm-related damages Two week window for reporting losses Property and business owners who had losses due to the recent winter weather may be eligible for assistance getting their property back in order. Eligibility is determined through a damage assessment process which takes into account total reported losses within King County.
Impacts of winter weather, such as snow load and flooding, may have resulted in individual property damages or business losses. King County homeowners and small business owners who have suffered damages from recent weather related conditions should file a damage report with King County Office of Emergency Management within the next two weeks.
A hotline number (800-523-5044) has been established for reporting damages within King County and is open during the following dates and times:
Dec. 29 - Dec. 31, 2008 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Jan. 5 - Jan. 9, 2008 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Before filing a damage report with OEM, citizens should contact their insurance company about existing coverage. They are also urged to document damages with photographs and keep records of all clean-up and repair costs.
In addition, business owners who have incurred weather-related economic losses should submit an Economic Injury Disaster Loan Program form to the Office of Emergency Management (fax# 206-205-4056). The form can be downloaded from the Washington Emergency Management Division's website (http://emd.wa.gov/disaster/documents/EconomicInjuryWorksheetnew9-2007.pdf). For more information, contact the Office of Emergency Management or visit the office website (http://www.kingcounty.gov/safety/prepare.aspx).
MTA: Sorry, I didn't catch it that SAFE was in Snohomish and not King County. Was going to delete this post then thought maybe there are other folks with damage that might still be in KC.

That sounds really helpful Tash, but unfortunately I live in Snohomish County, and this sounds like it is limited to King County only. Since I threw my back out and until I get a hold of some good drugs can barely move from the half propped up on my back position I have been in, I am going to call today to order the replacement roofing for the one Noble shelter that has the roofs completely cave in. For the others, I think they can be banged back into place and will hopefully still work again without leaking. I'd like to try and get a work party together ASAP because without the shelter horses are doubled up and in my arena and it is very crowded. I will also need volunteers to help put up a new hay shelter for me. The good news is my arena is insured (but not the shelters) and I have a guy coming out today to give me a quote on fixing the gutters and the one support beam that cracked. I have a $500 deductible which still hurts but it is better than nothing. I am thinking maybe Thursday or Friday, as I know a lot of people have those days off. At the very latest Saturday. Unfortunately, the weather is going to be miserable so I don't expect this to be much fun. I am moving this thread into volunteer needs and those of you are that are available, can you please post here along with what day(s) works for you?
