The past July, I took in a very sweet gray Appendix QH mare named Powder. She is 14 years old and spent her life as a broodmare (she had 9 foals.) I don't have to tell you guys that as a broodmare her care was the last thing her owners considered. Her silver tail has years of urine staining, and no matter how often I wash her tail, I can't remove the staining. Does anyone have any remedies they can share with me? Here is a picture of Powder when she arrived in July, and also some recent pictures. You can see her tail in the pictures. By the way - thanks to DAPHNE Powder's feet look great!

Coconut is a white & fleabitten red Arab (grey) who's tail is supposed to be white and it often is not. The best thing I've used is a blue shampoo (and sorry I can't think of the name of it but it's very generic looking in the store...whitening shampoo) made to whiten your horses coat, mane & tail. I know friends who use this product to whiten just the socks of their other colored horses because it's really simple to get a bright white just by shampooing. I can not even imagine NOT using that product. It's very simple and has worked well...if you get a chance to check out her show photos that Liz Stabber did you will see a GLOWING white tail.... lizstabbertphoto.smugmug.com/gallery/5827756_HW7hb#363828227_kyKpFand lizstabbertphoto.smugmug.com/gallery/5827756_HW7hb#363831051_aVyMtYou might not believe that her tail looked very much like your horses tail the day before!! Check out the back feet too...same story. You can get this stuff in any tack/feed store. You'll love it! By the way, I love Powder's coloring

Thank you so much for the tip! I'll see if I can find the shampoo the next time I go to the co-op. What beautiful show photos... and that is a REALLY white tail. I'm eager to see how the shampoo works

What beautiful show photos... and that is a REALLY white tail. Thanks, she cleans up pretty well...not bad for a scruffy rescue ;D but Thanks to Liz for those photos too!! She did a great job of capturing the moment. Coconut and I have been lucky enough to have a few folks, Leahlady included, who've been so gracious in helping me chronicle her recovery in photos. I do love that little mare

Quiksilver is one, but any shampoo for white horses that has bluing in it will work wonders! Also using a detangler product(like Cowboy magic, Vetrolin shine)sometimes helps to prevent the staining

Quiksilver!! That's it Thanks winterlakesfarm! & yes, I agree, a conditioner does help in fending off staining for a while. I'm feeling inspired ...best get out there and do something about that !!

WHITE AND BRIGHT Shampoo ROCKS. I have not tried Quicksilver - but, the white and bright is outstanding. Many of these shampoo's do dry the hair though - so, Definately use an outstanding conditioner. I actually like Pantene Sleek and Smooth conditioner. Also - using a good tail bag can help keep the tail maintained once you get it clean Sara

Yesterday I bought some Quiksilver, and washed Ms Powder's tail. She really is the sweetest horse, and so patient too. I don't have a nice barn with a washrack, so she and I were out by the barn with buckets of warm water. She can be ancy at times, but for some reason she just stood still and let me work. I think she knew that it was spa day and that I was going to give her a "makeover." I don't have pictures yet, but her tail is BEAUTIFUL!!! There is very little stain left (if any), and her tail the most beautiful silvery white color. I swear she went back to her pasture standing a little taller, walking a little prouder Thank you from Powder and I!
