Since SAFE does not currently have a central facility to call home, we rely on a network of foster homes to house the horses we rescue. We never ever have enough foster homes, so if you would be interested in becoming a SAFE Foster Parent, read on!
SAFE horses awaiting adoption are typically in foster care for 6-8 months. While we are certainly open to shorter term foster homes, or emergency only foster homes, it is the long-term stable homes we need the most. We are very supportive of our foster homes, and will work hard to ensure a beneficial relationship all around.
What SAFE Provides:
1) SAFE pays for all routine and emergency veterinarian care, and all farrier care.
2) SAFE offers Foster Homes three options for feeding horses in their care
a) The foster home pays for and provides all necessary hay and grain, and can claim an income tax deduction for any unreimbursed expenses incurred.
b) SAFE can purchase and provide hay and grain to the Foster Home.
or c) SAFE will pay a monthly stipend to the foster home for each horse
What the Foster Home Provides:
1) Adequate shelter for each horse and safe fencing (no barbed wire!)
2) Clean water and feeding of sufficient amounts of hay and grain to maintain good body weight for each horse
3) Close supervision to ensure that the horse remains healthy and injury-free, and willingness to contact SAFE promptly if a problem arises
4) Regular updates to SAFE about the horse. Also must agree to a visit by a SAFE member at least once per month. This means that foster homes need to be within reasonable driving distance of a SAFE member.
5) Love, attention, pats, scritches, and hopefully, carrots.
If you would like to get involved with SAFE as a Foster Home, please go to the website, review the foster contract, and then fill out and return the Foster Application. SAFE will arrange a site visit prior to approving a foster home.
Foster contract and application can be found here: www.safehorses.org/about/policies.html
