Seriously. I have a 22 year old AQHA mare who is losing pigment on the right side of her face. Only. What the heck is that about? I've got the vet coming out soon for other stuff so I'll have her take a look but has anybody seen this happen before? The skin is not raw or sensitive - it's simply gone pink on her.

This is not common but does happen on some horses - some appys are more prone to it. I would have a full blood pannel pulled including mineral levels and full cell counts. I would also go ahead and check to make sure your kid is not developing IR or other cushings/metobolic issues.
BUT - if your kid is healthy, no temp, eating well - and has no cancer-looking areas - I would not stress too much. BUT - do go ahead and put sun screen on any exposed areas.

Yeah, I have since heard from a bunch of people that this is no big deal and not to worry about it much. She is a Quarter Horse and is in beautiful condition otherwise - no signs of IR or anything. Slick coat, perfect weight, etc. What an odd thing, though - I've just never seen it before! I will try the sun screen, I wonder if that's it? She does live outside but she has lived outside for many years without incident.

It for sure looks like vitiligo to me, I have seen before on people as well as a horse I knew back in Nevada. If diagnosed, its a auto immune disorder and not harmful just cosmetic. However, I would put sunscreen on the areas if we ever will see the sun this year.
