What a wonderful horse! Is this one of the horses that was going to be someone's dinner? I can't believe it!

It's amazing what people throw away, isn't it? I always say that. Look at Azalea too...positively gorgeous animal.

WooHoo - is there any way to get a photo of him (or her). I'd love to see a Larkspur baby.

Larkspur's baby Coker Road won at EMD today. COOL! Sad, however, that such a good broodmare was ever in need of rescue. You'd think she'd have earned her retirement.

I have some sad news...Lark's filly, "Flying Flurry" was put down due to founder. I ran into her owner at the track today, so when I asked how she was doing, this was the response. I've never had a horse founder, but I thought it was treatable...am I wrong?

I don't believe there is any treatment for founder - the treatment is usually removing the initial cause (over-eating grain, too much lush grass, hard surface trauma, colic) and waiting for the horse to recover. It is a wait and see game to see how bad the trauma to the feet is going to be. In severe cases - the lamina starts to separate from the hoof wall (hence the word laminitis) and the tendons that are attached to the coffin bone structures literally pull the coffin bone down so the point of the coffin bone starts to point toward the ground instead of the point of the hoof. (This is what they are referring to when they talk about rotation) You can imagine this is extremely painful for the horse and imagine putting their kind of weight on a bone now starting to point downward - in very severe cases the coffin bone may actually break through the bottom of the hoof. That is why horses who have foundered severly and recovered have that 'look' to their front hooves - it is from the horse not only attempting to relieve some of the pressure on the feet by rocking back but to sort of mitigate any drop of the coffin bone by physically altering the way they stand. (rocked back) So the short answer is - it depends on the horse, the severity of the founder and/or the owner's willingness to wait it out and then try to sell a foundered horse. For once they founder - chances are much greater that it will happen again. This is all by memory from many years ago - if anything has changed or if I got something wrong - please feel free to correct me.

Oh man, that is a shame about Flying Flurry. HnH you summed up foundering pretty well. Lark's last baby (a colt) is going through the OTOBA sale - he was foaled on 5/10/05 and is a Slew grandbaby! I took some pictures of Lark on Saturday after her bath - she was such a good girl and stood so patiently while we combed out her tail. She's a neat mare, alright. Peggy thanks for letting me come play!
