Sponsored by COTH/SAFE. CHEETAH age: 11-12 y.o. sex: gelding color: bay breed: Morgan cross height: 14 HH adoption fee: $775 This stout, good-looking fellow is still a bit wary of people, but with kind and patient handling, he is slowly learning to trust again. He is not mean or aggressive, just a bit distant and aloof. He is sound and has a smooth gait, although flexions showed the possibility of some mild arthritis. Initially he will need an experienced rider and some refresher training, but he has the makings of a good "husband horse" with his stout sturdy build. Cheetah has some proud flesh on his left hind foot that has been surgically removed and he has recovered well from this surgery. He is branded with a broken arrow design. Cheetah has been vaccinated, wormed, evaluated by a vet, and had a Coggins pulled. He has been through quarantine. More Cheetah photos here: photobucket.com/albums/b144/schwung/Cheetah/

Here's an update from Keefe's adoptor I received this morning: Cheetah is doing so great!! I rode him for the first time yesterday and it was awesome. I hope to ride him again today. I have spent the last month building trust and a good relationship with him. I can't say enough about him, I love him. He is in the field with the other horses and when I go out, he comes right over! I have been working with him just about everyday, but when the weather changed, I was a wimp and didn't work with him for 5 days. He got very nippy and forgot his manners and would walk all over me. So, the 6th day, I toughened up and worked with him in the rain and the 7th day he was back to a happy horse. He really enjoys the attention and the "playing". I am sending a picture to show you that he is still maintaining that tummy of his! Also, Spice is doing great. She has gained weight too and I am trying to find the balance point now of maintaining her weight and not losing/gaining. She is such a sweetheart! Thanks again! Traci Oh, his name is Keefe- it means lovable and handsome. Sappy I know, but when I tried to find a name that meant mighty warrior or brave, it just didn't fit!

I am so happy for Keefe. I have been watching him since he was first listed. He sounds like he has a wonderful home.

Here is an update from Traci, who adopted Keefe: I was looking for a horse that was stand-offish and not trusting of people right away. I wanted a horse that would bond with me and become a true partner. Keefe's description on the rescue page was exactly what I wanted and when I met him in person, I knew he was the horse for me. He would come up to people, but not let them pet him and certainly not let them put a halter on him! Once haltered, he would do most of what you asked of him, but not because he liked you and wanted to do it. I brought him home and started working with him everyday. He responded well and seemed to be liking working. We had a bad rain week and I went several days without working with him. He became an obnoxious brat. He was nippy and snotty and wouldn't let me touch him again. I started working him again everyday and wouldn't you know, he calmed right back down. That was when I knew he was really enjoying working. He is very curious and very smart- a lot of fun to work with. I have to be constantly challenging him or he gets bored easily. I spent a month working him from the ground before I rode him. Our first ride was great and I can't say how thrilled I was with him. I can see why he ended up at a feedlot when I see his bratty side come out, but all he needs is someone to give him something to do and someone to spend time with him. He is not the kind of horse that can be left in the field all winter and then be ready to go the first nice day in spring. He is the kind of horse you spend time with all year long and enjoy every little step he takes towards trusting you- the perfect horse for me! Thank you to those who saw something more in him and saved him at the feedlot. Keefe and I are both very grateful!
I don't know how to attach a picture from photobucket, so let me know if this doesn't work It's not a recent picture. He is woolly and dirty and "wintery" right now and looks so much better in summer! When he starts shedding out again, I can take a better picture and you can switch it out if you want.

Just goes to show you that one person's junk is another person's treasure. I am so glad that Keefe found his own special human to love him and treat him right. Thanks for posting this!

How is Keefe doing? He was one of my faves when he was on the lot... Such a handsome horse.

Keefe was at the feedlot with this huge keratoma on his hind leg. At the time it was about 5 times the size in the picture. We had Dr. Hannah remove it, but it looks like it has grown back some, as they tend to do. It still looks a lot better than it did! It never seemed to bother him much, was just unsightly.

Sadly, upon contacting Keefe's adopter to do our yearly site visit, we were informed that Keefe had been donated to a Christian youth camp a few months ago. This is again another CBER/pre-adoption contract horse from 2005 so we could not prevent this, although I am disappointed that the adopter never even contacted us to see if we would take the horse back (which we would have). I am trying to get contact with the camp to let them know of our interest in the horse and hopefully they will keep in touch. I am not worried so much about life as a camp horse as I am with what may happen to him when he is not longer usable in their program.

I received an email back from the camp ranch director. Keefe has been renamed "Ringo" and is doing well. When he arrived this spring he was a bit spoiled and disrespectful on the ground and under saddle but is now working out very well as a camp horse.
I asked about what they do with horses that can no longer be used in their program, and she replied that they often go to campers that want to keep them or retire to a lighter use lesson program but that she would keep our information in his file. She asked for a little bit of his background history and I gave her what I knew and his previous vet records and I am hoping that she will return the favor by providing us pictures, updates, and maybe even visits.
So while this isn't the best outcome for Cheetah/Keefe/Ringo, its not the worst either, and at least we are able to keep in touch with where he is!
