Governor Gregoire Endorses Washington State Horse Park!
We have some great news to report to you as a member of the Washington State Horse Park Foundation!
In the final days of 2006, Governor Christine Gregoire included in her Capital Budget proposal to the 2007 state Legislature a request for more than $3.8 million for the first phase of constructing the Washington State Horse Park in Cle Elum! These funds would trigger transfer of title to over 100 acres from Suncadia to the Horse Park Authority, and cover completion of design, development, engineering, permitting, site clearing and construction of an outdoor arena in coming months as the first stage of a much larger build-out.
The Governor’s support is a very significant endorsement considering the large number and size of other sports venue projects around the state seeking funding from the 2007 budget. We believe there probably are two major reasons why the Horse Park was able to gain the Governor’s support: a thriving horse community will benefit residents and related businesses all over the state and, building the Horse Park will require a relatively modest amount of funding compared to tax dollars currently being sought by some “for profit†teams and franchises.
Despite this victory with the Governor, the Horse Park faces some very powerful and skilled interest groups vying for funding from the Legislature in 2007, and we cannot be complacent. We need your help to demonstrate that grass roots support for the Horse Park exists in all 48 Legislative Districts across the state.
The Senate and House convene January 8th to begin deliberating on the budget. As of this date only about a dozen supporters have provided copies of letters they’ve written to their representatives, yet those few had an impact on Governor Gregoire. We must do much more to reach multiple officials in 48 separate Legislative Districts or we stand to lose everything we’ve achieved so far. Please write to your District’s Senator and (2) House Representatives, and urge others to do the same (especially if you know people in less populated Districts in the state) – this is not a difficult task. Go to www.washingtonstatehorsepark.org <http://www.washingtonstatehorsepark.org> to find out who you need to contact and what you need to say, and please take action as early in January as possible.
We are so close to making the Horse Park a reality. You have already demonstrated you are behind the Horse Park by becoming a member - please continue to show your support to make it happen!
Let me know if you have any questions, comments or suggestions and, last but not least, Happy New Year!
Sincerely,
Leslie
