The horse world has a million different products for every complaint or issue, real or imagined, so I thought a thread about what products we've found that we've used & liked would be helpful to everyone.
I'll get the ball rolling with:
-Purina Equine Senior: I was always skeptical about senior feeds, but after seeing the difference just a couple pounds a day makes for the 3 horses I own or know well who are on it, I can't say enough good things about it.
Herbal Ulcer Blend: made by Equine Science, this product is the only ulcer product that has ever worked on my mare Brandy (and we've tried most of them). It costs under $30 a month & is worth every penny. (I get it from Dr Sue Connors in Yelm, but there are several distributors online as well)
Special Joint Blend: Also from Equine Science. Hands down the best joint supplement I've ever seen. My trainer & I have tried it on several horses who historically have been on: Cosequin, Corta-flx, Corta-flxHA, and LubriSyn. It works better than any of them, and is also under $30/month per horse. My trainer's 25+ year old schoolie was being retired (even with CortaFlxHA & bute) until she started on this supplement. She's dropped about 10 years between this & the Equine Senior!

Here's one place to get it on-line, though I've never ordered from them. www.essentialmatters.net/equinescienceproducts.htm#Special%20Joint%20BlendMy entire barn gets it from the chiropractor we use for both our horses & ourselves (she also hosts a lot of clinics), Dr. Sue Connors in Yelm. If you want her contact info, let me know & I'll PT it to you. The only product we've tried from Equine Science that we haven't been really happy with was their PMS (Painful Mare Soother)...regular raspberry leaves (ie, Mare Magic) seems to work much better on both the horses we've tried it on.

Oh gosh, my favorite subject! Healing Tree products such as their Tea Tree Shampoo: tinyurl.com/du2tyand their skin conditions Concentrate. tinyurl.com/c9oka This stuff is pure magic on rain rot and fugus conditions. I sent Clayton some last summer to wash the new feedlot horses down with. I think I sent some to CBER way back when as well. Anyway- it's more of a "warm weather" thing as you soak them down with it, but I LOVE it! TAkes the itchies away from bites too Oh- can't forget Keratex Liquid for toughening up feet! This stuff literally turned my not useable Trak/TB mare (because her feet were so soft they were mushy!) into the nicest hoofed horse my farrier had worked on in a long time. Other favs include: Cowboy Magic Detangler and Shine Eqyss Avocado Conditioning Spray Animal Legends Hoof Dressing Animal Legends "Flicks" Fly Spray (all natural!) Weatherbeeta Horse Clothing Ration Plus supplement Ground Flax Vita Plus supplement (old standby but it's complete!) Animalintex poultice pads (you HAVE to have these!) Gosh, I'm such a tack and supply-o-holic. I worked in a large tack shop for a few years and did the mobile unit at horse shows and I was in horsie heaven. I had a small discount and I got to see all the new stuff come out -Amy (who has 4 tack boxes of STUFF!)

I'm going to add another to the list... raspberry leaves (Mare Magic).
Brandy has absolutely awful heat cycles, and her cycles are quite abnormal (last too long, occur way too frequently). The only thing we've found that helps her is raspberry leaves. The previous owner used Mare Magic, but that's pretty darn pricey. I found out that Mare Magic is pure raspberry leaves AND that the bulk food section (in the tea & spices) at Fred Meyer has raspberry leaves. So I started buying them there for about 1/2 the cost. They work great. My trainer had one of her new mares on them & she didn't appear to have any heat cycles no matter how badly every other mare in the barn was in heat (and was getting a little plump) so my trainer actually ended up having her preg checked! Just a little while later, she stopped giving her the raspberry leaves & the next time the mares all cycled, sure-shootin' Berlin had a very obvious heat. I think she's going back on them!
They also are supposed to help with uterine tone, so are not harmful to mares you eventually plan on breeding. (Berlin actually has a date with a very fancy Irish Draught stallion this spring!)

CE, when I had my tea business, 'Deva's Teas', I ordered raspberry leaves by the pound for a tea called Ruby Sipper. It was amazing stuff! But what I started out to say is, you can buy the raspberry leaves wholesale even cheaper. If you'd like me to see if I can still get it by the one pound bag, I'd be happy to check in to it. A lb of raspberry leaves is a lot of leaves!

Ok Ok I think its time for Nala to get Rasberry leaves!!! Tell me how much to give her!! Please and Thank you! Now that she is at a training barn she needs to be on her best behaviour. I was considering Regumate, but it sounds like Rasberry leaves work as well. O and are they safe for preggers mares..just in case? I still do not know if she is really cycling or a ho. The leaves may help me figure that out!

I always fed about a one ounce scoop a day. But sometimes the leaves are fluffier than others & our dosing is a little haphazard at times. But it seems to work!
Lildun...I bet the stuff you got is probably nicer & fresher than the stuff I've been getting. If you'd be willing to check into for me, I'd really appreciate it! (and maybe let Nala's Mom know too!)
Thanks!

It's great stuff. But now you've got me thinking... There's an organic raspberry farm up the road. Wonder what they do with their prunings???

PLEASE add me to the list of raspberry leaf "needers"! Sprite is become a total head case when she is im heat and even though she is with a gelding 24/7, HE is not good enough for her and she paces fenceline all night trying to catch the spotted half Arab's attention. This probably explains her weight loss too as she walks and walks and walks and won't settle to eat hay etc. I guess it explains the "thin" wekk and the more "plump" weeks. Aly is a sleaze when she is in heat but is the sedentary non excitable kind of girl. Hormones make Sprite nutty -Amy

To keep those older horses moving well and to speed injury recovery, I can't say enough about Recovery EQ. Our 24 yr old arab had a bowed tendon Feb 04 and was sound ridable checked completely sound May 04. I still have her on it and she was a bucking snorting hot shot today, chasing all those little guys around all day long. You used to have to get it from a vet, but now it's available at www.smartpakequine.com and just in the newest catalog, finally at www.countrysupply.com! Has SAFE thought about setting up a donation account with Country Supply? Another way to get pennies into the coffers. You must not need to be an approved 501C as CBER has had one for a long time.

I like Biotin (I use the Paragon brand) for my TB's crappy feet. I began using it nearly a year ago after he had an abscess, and there is definitely a difference in the horn quality, and his coat is super shiny too.
