I have some sad news to report about Bo. As I mentioned before, when Bo first came from the auction he was clearly favoring his left hind. After his trim, this changed more to his right hind, although he seems very uncomfortable on both hinds. He will usually stand with his right hind cocked way off to the side, so far out that his hoof tips up. This has gotten more and more noticable, and now he when he walks sometimes he straightens out and sometimes he walks sideways, almost like he is half passing. I was concerned but holding out hope until after Hannah had a chance to look at him. Unfortunately, Hannah wasn't too optimistic about poor Bo. His heart rate is elevated, indicating he is in a fair amout of pain. She suspects a stifle ligament tear or rupture based on how he is standing, which would require a ultrasound to diagnose, but does not carry a good prognosis anyway. Euthanasia is going to be the likely recommendation for Bo. We agreed to try heavily buting him for a few days, and see how if that gets him to stand normally. But more than likely, we are going to have to let Bo go, and realize that while we weren't able to save him, we still rescued him from a terrible death. We did not do his teeth, they were in poor shape but not terrible, and he could probably not stand for sedation anyway. He's eating his mash well, and he ate his mash with bute in it just as readily tonight, so hopefully tonight he will have a more peaceful night than he's been having. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. I know all of us were hoping for a better outcome for Bo.

Oh, schwung...I'm so sorry to hear this. Now I really wish I could make a trip over there to meet him, but I just can't within the next couple days (and I'm sure weekdays probably aren't the best for you either!)
Please give Bo some extra love from me. You're right though...if anything, he was saved from a horrible ending. What could have been terrifying now turned into a couple weeks of love and FOOD! You did right by him. Thank you

I always say that the definition of rescue is "cleaning up everybody else's mess." While someone else ruined this horse and dumped him to wind up on a truck to Mexico, you stepped up and now you're going to wind up having to do the right thing that whoever used him all of this time was either too cheap or too weak-willed to do. It is really tough but it's definitely a better outcome for him than he was headed for, and I know he is enjoying these weeks at Schwung's All-You-Can-Eat Buffet.

I would be happy to donate the funds for Bo's euthanasia. I fell in love with him at the auction and think that SAFE has given him a wonderful happy time in his last days. This is a much better outcome than what the kill buyer would have provided. He has had love, a great companion in Dobbin and will be surrounded by people who care for him when he is allowed to peacefully cross to a place where he will be without pain. I cannot imagine him being loaded en mass into the dealers trailer from the auction, being in competition for food in a feed lot and then being hauled in a stock trailer to slaughter with that injury. He has had the best possible end and SAFE has helped another fogotten horse. Thank you to Jaime and Bonnie for using Odie's legacy to help Bo.

Nuts. I am soooo sorry to hear this, poor poor guy. I do agree that this is a MUCH better way for him to go, than being stuffed into an overcrowded, possibly double-decker truck, heading for IL or Can. or Mex. So sorry Schwung. I hope his last over-Buted days are cavorting/rolling/eating treats/trotting days... and thank you, WLF.

oh Jaime...I'm so sorry! I didn't even have to meet him to love the old guy...I can't imagine how tough this is for you. But like everyone else wrote, he will go having spent his final days being happy and safe...that alone is a fair price for doing the right thing.

Oh Jaime...... I am so sorry! This really stinks..... I am so happy that he has been able to enjoy his days at your place, with lots of love, food and sunshine on his back. And speaking "for Odie" - Thanks for saving this guy from a horrific trailer ride to a terrible end. Thanks to SAFE for saving Bo and giving him the dignity he deserves. Hugs from me and Kelsey.......
