My first grader brings home gobs of papers, so I will admit I don't always spend the time looking through them as thoroughly as I should. I was just flipping through some old ones and found a rolled up paper with cotton balls, looking quite a mess. I almost just threw it away, but decided to unroll and see what it was "suppose" to be.
It was a Martin Luther King dream assignment. The rolled paper and cotton balls were a cloud and my Marina had written her dream (7 year old spelling and all)
"I dream that one day there will be no more horse slater"
I am so proud of her! Most kids had dreams of brownies for dessert every night or no school. It's always nice to get the affirmation we all need that our kids will be good. I have no worries about mine, I firmly believe being taught compassion to animals touches all aspects of life. My kids will do well!

Peri - Sounds like you have great kids! You should be proud! My daughter had to write a persuasive paper for her High School English class - and while many kids wrote about persuading their parents to "change their curfew" or something equally as important - my daughter chose to write about banning horse slaughter and describing what happens to a horse in that process - I was quite proud of her for standing up and reading that paper to her class (public speaking is a huge fear for her) and being strong in her beliefs. It is a great feeling as a parent to see your kids really passionate about something and being willing to speak out!
