I just checked the against slaughter yahoo group and the habitat for horses against slaughter forum and I didn't see a thing about this. I think it might be a rumor only...
I know that Sweeney and Whitfield voted against the house bill because there was some vague language inserted into the final amendment, but nothing about privately funded inspectors and it was later determined to be language that didn't affect the amendment adversely.
The Ag Bill has passed the Senate and it's on the President's desk...I am not sure if he's signed it, but even if he hasn't, it's too late to add anything to it.

Okay...that same thread just had an update from Marli...the private inspector thing is just a rumor and the President signed the bill yesterday. So...starting February one the slaughterhouses are closing down!

Are we sure it's Feb 1st? I read smewhere it is now March 10th. Because of the 120 day delay from signature.

I'm not sure... I haven't seen the definite date posted anywhere yet. The delay in passing and signing probably did push it out beyond Feb 1st.
Whatever the date is, it is too far away. I hope that the industry doesn't start filing lawsuits to delay it even further.
