My 9 year old 1/2 Arab gelding was a rescue, at least I feel he was. I've had him for a little over a year and a half. When I rescued him from his situation he was thin, dull coat, rain rot, over grown hooves and a halter on him so tight I had to cut it off and it left a mark that didn't go away until he shed his winter coat. I know if left where he was the situation could have went easily from bad to worse. He had been left to fend for himself in a pasture and was suppose to be taken care of by the residence of the property he was on. They may have thrown him a flake of moldy hay if they thought of it. I'm sure they just ignored him completely. He had major trust issues and it would take hours to catch him. He was not broke to ride and only had basic ground manners but I was obligated to help him as best I could. He would head butt me in the head and had no respect. After a lot of time, patience and tears and with the great help of some great people at the boarding stables he's at he's become a great riding horse. He gets turned out with other horses and has really calmed down. He runs to the gate to meet me and shoves his nose in the halter. He still has some issues that we have to work on like trailering and cross ties but compared to when I first rescued him from his situation he's a completely different horse. Being my first horse he has taught me many valuable lessons and I couldn't imagine my life without him.

Great story, Skyline! I'm glad things have turned around so well for him. How did you get possession of him? It would be helpful to know because I think that a lot of us see horses that look like they are being ignored (or worse) and don't know what to do about it. Are you going to be able to ride him (or are you already?) Cheers to you for saving Denali's life!

Are you going to be able to ride him (or are you already?) Cheers to you for saving Denali's life! In response to your question about how I gained possesion. I guess I just lucked out. I found the owner of the horse and asked if I could have him. He hadn't been to see his horse in quite sometime even though he owned the horse since he was a foal. He didn't have time for him due to work and was pretty relieved that I was there to take him. He signed him over to me, papers and all. I'm sure it isn't usually that easy. He was sensible enough to realise the seriousness of the situation. Most people I know aren't that way. It's not my first time rescuing a horse from a bad situation, but my first horse. I'm told I can't save them all but i'll give it my best shot. Happy to have found this board and I'm hoping when time permits to adopt a great horse from SAFE.

What a gorgeous boy you have - and such a great story. It goes to show what a little perserverance can do. I'm so glad that you followed up to find out who owned the horse and that the owner did end up with the best interest of the horse on his mind when he gave him to you. Denali is one lucky boy with you as his fabulous human.

It's Denal! He's turned into such a champ. I'm glad he and Ben get along so well. Denali is one of the only geldings Ben's ever been able to tolerate in his crotchety-old-man-ness old age. Plus my little filly is in love with Denali's hunky rear-end. It doesn't hurt that you're rather, hmmm, "involved" with Denali's prior owner, eh? I'm sure Denali is just glad to have found someone who wants him for more than just a pasture potato. Which he also does well, by the way. Yay for Rose and Denal! ;D
