Adara is fine. Still same as ever. She did let me pet her nose today without having to grab the halter first. She also seems very interested in my cat, Benny. He follows me everywhere and he followed me into the stall, stopped, stared at Adara and then ran when she walked towards him. She watched him go and then went to the door and stared after him and then watched him for almost an hour. Completely ignored me. Just watched that cat, who of course stopped about 15 feet away, curled up in the sun and took a nap. :0 She's still cranky when we clean her stall. But she hasn't charged again or actually kicked out again. Just threatens too. She's still eating like crazy (eating more of her grain/sn. mix now) and gaining weight. Her belly is huge, I haven't seen the foal move yet today. Of course it's hard to tell if it's really the foal or her moving sometimes. Othertimes, you can clearly see something poking out.

Okay so I went and took some pics just now. I didn't get any bag pics, she wouldn't move and her legs were blocking my view. She wanted my camera in this one... Tummy shot... I had just fly sprayed her down. The dang things won't leave her alone and there's no way to get a fly sheet on her.

She looks good, and at least she's letting you fly spray her! Also, she doesn't look like she wants to kill you in those photos, so that's a good thing.

She's figured out that the nasty smelling bottle means no flies! She'll even turn too. She has her moments where she's nice and calm, luckily they're getting much more frequent.

I should hope that by now she has a different look on her face. That first night I terrified her. I took her out of the pen she'd been in for weeks, ran her into a squeeze shoot, put a halter on her, pushed her into a trailer (though surprisingly she went in nice and calmly with only a little encouragement) and then she went on a nice trip in the dark, unloaded into a strange place... Yep, she was very scared that first night. I'm so glad she's not as scared now. She's just cranky at times. I think I would be with that big of belly. It sticks out that far on both sides. She has gained weight, mostly in the baby department, but a little over the ribs and a little in the chest and rump. Not a lot I think most of it's going to the foal and not on her. She's up to eating almost a bale a day. I'm trying to get her to eat more of the grain/sn. mix that will put the weight on her much faster, we're up to two handfuls of it and it takes her all day to finally eat it all. She's just not really interested in it. I did get some wormer in her, tried to get a 1/3 dose in her, wore alot of it myself, so I'm going to wait another week or so and try again. I don't think worms are really the problem since she has put on the weight. But it can't hurt to worm her a little bit.

Well, I had a very busy day today. Yesterday my farrier was supposed to be here, but she broke down on the way here so we did the 'herd' trims today instead. Oh, boy was it a mess. First off Hope decided not to tolerate anyone (not even me) touching her feet, so we moved to the round pen, everytime she acted up we sent her off for a workout. We did get her feet done, but she was in a full sweat by the time she decided to cooperate (I hate those snotty cycling mares - yep she's the one sending Rhoen into a tail spin) and it was almost 2 hours after we started. Then of course it took us a good 45 minutes to cool her out to turn her out again... The filly Daphne was great, a little snotty about one back foot, but we got her done in about 20 minutes. So then we moved onto DC, he's such a great old man that he just stood there, no halter nothing, just stood there. He was done in 15 minutes. Then came Saheib.... Well, he has a problem with the clippers, on one foot. So we sent him out everytime he acted up. But we got him done in about 45 minutes. Most of that time was spent on that one foot too. Then we go to play with Korey (the remaining stud colt). We didn't do his feet, we've been working on the stranger person thing with him. He hates strangers even touching him. I can pick up his feet, clean them, beat on them whatever I want, but anyone besides me and he turns into a monster. The good news is that this time she was able to pick up and clean all 4's. So, next time we'll try for a trim. So it's now about 5 hours after we started.... We're done, decided that Nahima could wait (she's just not ready yet) and Rhoen had his done when he was gelded so... Yep it was Adara time. Nothing too stressful (saved her for last because her quarantine isn't up yet), but just enough to get her thinking a bit. Sarah was able to pick up both fronts and touch the backs. Progress. When Adara got upset we just let her walk off, waited and tried again. No charging, no kicking, pretty good. At least her feet are in decent shape and can wait awhile further. Of all of them I think she actually did the best in comparision. The rest are used to being handled and everyone of them acted up today (well except for DC, but then he never acts up), while Adara did act up, it was nothing near what we were expecting for an unhandled horse in a little stall. Her bags are getting more defined now too. Her, well I guess to describe it...her nipples? are getting longer and poking down more and there are no 'wrinkles' left in her bag either. But she's calm as can be today. No real fussing, she only put her ears back once too and didn't even try to bite us once. Just mostly kept trying to take her leg back, that was it, no kicking... give her back her leg and she'd just put it down and move off... Sarah think she's a standardbred or maybe a cross of one. I'm not sure what breed she is, but she's pretty and she'll be great once she's all the way filled in again.

Finally! No sorry, no foal, but... I went to feed everyone this morning, carrying my 6 buckets of grain & grain mix. I get up to Adara and her pitifully empty bucket (two handfuls - I have small hands too- is just not alot in one of those buckets)... I poured it into her tub and she put her head down and ate it all! Finally, no going out there at 4 in the afternoon and finding some left in the bin. She ate it all right up! Now I can start increasing the amount, maybe split it into two feedings and she'll gain a bit more weight that way too. Sarah left me a jug of all natural horse cookies yesterday and Adara loves them. She took it right from my hand, no hesitation at all. So now she's eating cookies and her grain mix. Still not eating the apple or carrot pieces yet. We'll work on it.

Just when I thought things were going so well... I went up to give her her daily brushing. Well.. She was okay, but kept turning her head to look at me, so I'd let her smell the brush and she'd turn back around. She does bite so I'm real cautious when she turns her head to me... I got her back and rump brushed but she would have nothing to do with the brush on her belly today - every time I'd start to go down her side, she'd turn with teeth out and ears back until I stopped. So, I skipped the belly and went to do her neck. I guess she'd had enough. She nailed me. Turned and bit, grabbed my hand (the one with the brush) pulled it back with an angry squeal, stomped her feet and let go. I let her back off, gave her a minute then did another few brush strokes (with my other hand) and then left. I'm okay, just a bit swollen. She popped every bone in my hand (it just kept popping - sounded awful), but didn't break the skin or break any bones. I think nothing major got hurt partially because my hand was wrapped around the brush at the time, so she got me and the brush, not just me. It hurts but no permanent damage done. I think I'll just let her be until tomorrow. She's being very cranky today. No messing with her, I already told my husband to leave her alone, just toss the hay over the door and that's it. He'll use the barrier to clean the stall. Hopefully, this is just one of her moods and that it will pass. She was so quick too, none of her little warnings this time, just turned and tagged me. Crumpy old thing.

Oh, OUCH! I'm sorry to hear that happened. I really do hope the grumpiness is partially hormonal and that she'll get nicer after that baby is born and things settle down.

Well, hopefully it passes soon. She's still grumpy, tried to take a chunk out of my husband last night while he cleaned the stall and when that didn't work she tried to kick him through the barrier. He ignored her and so she stood there and squealed at him the whole rest of the time he was in there. This morning, she's not too much better. I went to give her the grain mix and she grabbed her bin and pulled it from me then squealed at me. Ever had a tug of war with a horse over a grain bin? Well, the horse wins. So, I then just tried to dump the bucket into her bin and she head butted the bucket, sending her small amount to the floor of the stall (barely missed her bin). I just left, told her if she was going to be that way about it, she could eat it off the floor. My hand is much better today. And on the upside, Adara is being a brat, but Rhoen let me brush him yesterday - the first time! I only got him about 3/4 done but it is major progress.
