I couldn't tell u about the scar, maybe we can get a look tomorrow. Mostly she keeps her rump to the back of the stall and still gets real nervous if I try to touch her. I'll let you know tomorrow. I'm off to my awful bed in my van now up by the barn.

Okay, Hannah just left. She is amazing. Thank you Jamie for recommending her etc. She is absolutely wonderful!
The mare is - best guess from checking her teeth - in her 20's, probably an old broodmare who's had a baby year after year. She has many old scars and dents all over her (from stallions teeth during breeding ?).
We were able to get her new cuts cleaned up, but she'll need her remaining teeth done at a later date. She has 1 slightly swollen leg w/a cut on it, but we couldn't get her back legs touched. We did get her teets cleaned off - they were pretty grimey.
She kicked and fussed a bit and even tried to bite a few times, but over all, I think she did much better than I was expecting.
Hannah says the mare probably has a week or two before she foals, but that she could go anytime. I will definetly keep watching her. Other than that the mare seems in pretty good heath! Pics will come, once my computer is up and running again.

Rachelle ~ Thank you for saving her and her baby! I think that I know the killer you are talking about. He had bought 80 mares with foals last year from somewhere in Nevada. He "canned" the mares and was trying to sell the foals at the Marysville auction. When I heard him telling this story in the diner it took everything that I had not to kill him...........He makes me sick!

It's probably the same guy. He told me he was at the very first Marysville auction (40 something years ago) and has rarely missed one since. He sends his horses (he calls them canners) to Nevada. This mare was just waiting for the truck, probably they wouldn't have shipped her until after she foaled (who knows what would have happened to the foal), since she's already been there for at least two weeks. It was awful up there and yes I gritted my teeth quite a few times while talking with this guy, but at that point I would have done anything to get that mare out of there. She's calmed down now - she was a bit squirrley towards the end of the vet appt.- and is now back to happily munching her hay. At least she has stopped eating her straw in between feedings. I'll keep you all updated and I will definetly let everyone know when the foal arrives.

Okay I've decided on a name... Everyone kept telling me she's a beauty and to name her Belle, which means beauty. Well, it's a common name and we're into not so common names here. So, I settled on Adara, which does mean beauty. And the plus is that there isn't another animal here with a name beginning with that letter. So, it works.

Adara is very pretty, I like it. I happened to run into Dr. Hannah at the feedstore today (gotta love small towns) and we chatted a bit about your mare. She said how sweet and scared she was and how she couldn't believe that she was in with stallions and other mares.

I couldn't believe it either, the things some people do.... I really like Dr. Hannah, she's going to come back out and geld Rhoen for me. He's a 4 to 5 year old mustang stallion that we rescued. We've been waiting for him to gain enough weight to geld him. She says he's ready to go. I'm so glad he's finally there. This one deffinetly knows he's a stud!
Dr. Hannah is great. We got (mostly she did) alot more done with Adara than I figured we would. I really thought Adara would be a bit more aggressive (since she was still a bit scared) than she was. I think it was because Dr. Hannah was so sweet and gentle with her that it made all the difference. I would definetly reccommend her to anyone who asked. Thank you so much - for everything!

No baby yet. But this morning I was able to pet her shoulder and she didn't even try to move away! I did the 'happy dance' all the way down from the barn. I think I'm going to try a brush later and see if she likes it.

Kellie, thanks for the offer. Anyone is welcome to come by anytime they want to. I have quite a few horses here and sometimes I think I don't do enough for them (even though I get up at 5:30 and work with them until around midnight most nights). On my breaks to eat etc. I jump on my computer, update my records and scan the boards and adds. I'm so glad I can type quickly and have a very fast computer. I do have one here who needs someone else to work with him. He's decided he doesn't have to 'listen' to anyone else except me. He's an angel with me, does anything I ask of him, but the minute someone else takes the lead... he turns into a monster. Doesn't listen, acts up, misbehaves completely! I guess that's what I get for being the one to train all these guys... Anyway, if anyone would like to stop by just let me know. I'm one of the lucky ones who gets to stay home every day and not 'work' for a living, so I'm here all the time.

I got to brush Adara. Well, one side of her, but it was her neck, chest, both front legs, sides, back, under her belly, rump and all the way down to the hock on one back leg (on her off side no less)! I'm so excited. At first she flinched and all her skin wrinkled up, but soon she was relaxed enough to go back to eating! I'll try to get her other side done tomorrow. She didn't want to move away from her food (her other side was too close to the wall for me to get in there and brush it) and I figured I'd pushed enough for one day. I have no idea if she's ever been brushed before, but she seemed to like it. Of course right before I give her hay I've been petting her neck, shoulder and chest until she stands still and then I'll leave, go out of the stall and give her hay. So, that may have had something to do with it. So I've been 'pushing' a bit all day. I usually allow them up to a week to settle before I really start doing things with them, but I don't think I have that option with her (what if she needs help during foaling?). She's calming down so quickly. I'm just so happy about it. So much for the wild unhandled horse they told me she was. Of course I also think Dr. Hannah had a bit to do with it as well.
