Lexi's thread is woefully out of date. Lexi hasn't had much done with her the last few months due to lack of volunteers to ride her, and she has gotten a bit fat and sassy. Last night she was ridden by Amy, who previously fostered Whisper and Aiden, and then Amy took her home to work with her for the next 10 days and take her to the SAFE show! So hopefully she will be posting some updates soon and we will get to see her in action at the show. Thank you Amy for helping us with Lexi!!!

Lexi is doing well and we're going to try all sorts of classes at the show Saturday (dressage, english, western, trail - all walk/trot). She's a good all arounder. I've been working with her lightly almost daily since I picked her up last week and am definitely enjoying her. I haven't had her on the trails yet (hope to this evening); I am willing to bet she'd be great. She stands quietly, walks right out and isn't spooky (and if she does look at something, she doesn't spook "big"). She tries to please when I work on teaching her new things (though can get easily frustrated if she doesn't get it right the first time, but does great when things are broken down into small tasks with big pets as rewards). She's now doing turn on the forehand, haunches, and starting sidepassing. She's actually VERY responsive once she gets in tune with you and is in balance. She walked over my bridge first try, and only took a minute to walk through the "car wash" I set up (though she still isn't quite comfortable standing under it). We've been weaving through poles and barrels at the walk and trot and walking over poles - all just exercises to get more in sync. She is really great with my 3 yr old daughter - very gentle and patient. cid-70a6ba6051b3a183.photos.live.com/self.aspx/Lexi%20-%20SAFE%20Foster/Haley%20025.JPG[/img]So come check her out on Saturday! I am so glad she is getting these experiences! I tooke her on the trails after 60 days under saddle and she was a superstar. On the buckle the whole time, didn't care that she was way ahead of the other horses. She really is a great all arounder

I just had to post how proud I am of Lexi. She did GREAT for me at the show, especially considering I'd only started working with her the previous week and she'd had a month or two off before that.
Anyway, for the record she won the dressage Intro A & B classes as well as the high point for Intro (with a 68% score). She then went on to win the Green Horse Walk Only pleasure class, and placed 4th in Walk-Trot Western Pleasure Green Horse, Walk-Trot Western Pleasure Rescue Horse, and In-Hand trail. And though she was quite tired by the time English pleasure rolled around, she still placed 5th in Walk-Trot English pleasure Green Horse and Walk-Trot English Pleasure Rescue Horse. Oh, and she and my 3 yr old daugther also won a blue ribbon in Leadline. Lexi ended up wearing 4 different saddles at the show (dressage, western, hunt-seat, and leadline) for all her different classes and handled it all GREAT. She was definitely worried at times (especially early on), but looked to me for guidance and followed my lead nicely. You can't question the results on this being a great x-discipline mare!

Amy, you did an amazing job with her with so little prep time! And I know there were at least two people interested in her from the show so hopefully someone will take this little girl home!

I rode Lexi this weekend and she was a good girl. SAFE has done a great service to her in putting a fabulous foundation on her. She's such a sweet girl and so easy to handle. After many rides on a very greeney this summer, riding Lexi was a fun diversion! She's really fabulous walk & trot, the canter takes a little work to get the engine going.

Lexi's adoption fell through (through no fault of her own, adopter had second thoughts about the responsibility of owning a horse again, which while we are disappointed we do appreciate and understand). So we'll have to get some new pictures and video of her soon!

Is Lexi pretty safe for kids to ride? I know adults have been riding her, but I don't see anything mentioned about kids (at least recently, I didn't read through the old posts).
The reason I'm asking is my neighbors had to put their old Arab gelding to sleep. They have kids and I'm wondering if they'd be interested in Lexi...

Lexi was in a foster-to-adopt situation for 3 months with an 11 year old girl. She is pretty safe, and not spooky. She will test a new rider to see if they will really make her go forward, but once she figures out the rider knows what they are doing, she gives it up. So yes, I think she is pretty kid-safe.

Hmm. OK. I'll mention it to them. I haven't watched their daughter ride, so I'm not sure what level she's at. She's 9 years old.

I just thought I'd update Lexi's thread. She's a volunteer favorite. She's so sweet and easy to handle. It seems like she's always out getting groomed or loved on. I rode her a few times last fall in anticipation of her being looked at by a potential adopter (and of course, before that, she was at a great foster home where she was being worked consistently) but I don't think she's been ridden much since then. Figuring she was long overdue I pulled her out for a little spin. She was sweet, willing, and not balky under saddle. I only rode her for 20 or so minutes and then put her away. We didn't even attempt a canter because she can be somewhat unballanced at the canter and I didn't want to push it with her when I know she hasn't been in work recently. I always forget how much fun she is to ride.
