I spoke to Monica yesterday, and Trey is coming right along. He's been under saddle a few times and was a piece of cake to start. She said when she first got on he was fine and then he saw her on him out of the corner of her eye and kind of spooked himself, but then was fine. He has walked and trotted, even cantered a little. Her approach is basically she does a lot of groundwork exercises with them, and then when she finally gets on, she starts doing the same exercises they already know and are comfortable with on their back, so that they build confidence doing something they already know. He's doing great!

Trey was seen by a potential adopter today, and Mara was there to meet her and Monica. She liked him, so cross your fingers! There was a little mishap though...I guess the student that was riding him in the earlier photos was on him again, and she was riding in the arena. She rode over a lunge whip that was on the ground, he stepped on it and it kind of popped up and hit him in the belly, which spooked him, and he bolted, and then started bucking, and the girl fell off. But, it was TOTALLY not his fault, and the adopter could clearly see that (after all, he's only been under saddle 3 weeks!). I think Mara has some photos to post as well. ETA: the girl wasn't hurt though! (isn't that just like a rescuer - only worried about the horse...shame on me!)

Wow - he looks so fabulous. What a good boy. I'd jump if a lunge whip jumped up and hit me in the belly too.

Yes, that is totally understandable. I wouldn't hold that against a horse at all!
He is very cute.

Poor guy... and he's trying so hard! I hope that doesn't discourage someone from adopting him. Glad to hear the girl was okay too... hope she doesn't hold it against sweet Trey.

I'm going to visit Trey today, I can't wait to see him and talk to Monica about how he is doing. BTW - the first picture up above from the trainer is on the trainers website - www.naturalhorsesavvy.com/services - so everyone gets to see what a cute little backside our Trey has!

I talked to Monica today, Trey is doing great! He is still has a "baby brain" but he is really a very willing, solid, level-headed guy, and he is learning to work through stressful situations and rely on his rider for reassurance. They have been working on lateral work, caveletti and ground poles, and next week will be working on getting his canter work more solid. He has not offered any bucks or any other inappropriate behavior. She's going to also lunge him over some jumps with the help of the hunter/jumper trainer that is there when she gets back from a show next week, because she really feels he has a strong potential for jumping, being as athletic as he is and such a cute mover.
The current plan for Trey is that he will be finishing up his training this month and, if he's not adopted by then, he will go into foster care with kahluacowgirl who will be able to continue to work with him.

Trey is with me now, and on Saturday afternoon my volunteer Allison and I played with him a bit. He's really grown up since I last saw him, and he's lost every bit of his skittishness, and now really LOVES people and attention! We cross-tied him and brushed him and he stood like a pro. Then we took him into the arena and let him loose to say hello to the rest of my herd: Then a little work. He was really good to the right, but had some trouble figuring out how to lunge to the left. I don't think Monica does any lunging, so this was a little new to him. However, he figured it out very fast, and after that I was able to switch directions with him easily. He is such a cute mover! He also had a hard time understanding the concept of walking on the line. He understood trot, and understood halt, but walking was another story. Still, he is super smart and figured it out very quickly: And a short video clip. You have to agree, he has hunter pony written all over him! We would have ridden him, but at the moment we don't have a girth short enough to fit him either for my dressage saddle or Allison's hunt saddle. Does anyone have an english girth, around size 34-36" or so, that we could borrow? Just look at how cute he looks wearing a hunt saddle though!
