Dutchess is such a sweet girl. One day she was having an afternoon siesta with her pasture mate and whenever we looked like we might come over to visit she would always get up and come over to say "hi." "Are you guys coming over to visit?!"
Such a sweet social girl.

When I did my volunteer orientation yesterday, I just fell in love with Duchess - she is so sweet and touched my heart. I would love to be able to take her - just don't have a place. That could definitely change in the short term and I will be looking to adopt a SAFE horse.

I saw Duchess when I worked last Thursday and brought everyone carrots - then on Sunday I took my boyfriend's daughter to see her and brought apples. Pretty soon, maybe she will like me as much as I like her

We are very happy and excited! ;D Dutchess and Emma are such sweeties. They have become great buddies and like to spend time grooming each other. Both also seem to be confident enough to go nibble grass in different parts of the pasture so it seems they have made a very comfortable transition to their new home. We have been letting the girls get settled in before we pasture them with our TB; Striking Contrast. He has met them several times over the fence but we are just being gradual because, well, we can. Their first two mornings here have been beautiful. I'm admiring them right now thru my office window. They are leisurely nibbling fresh green grass while the morning sun filters thru the glade like woods. The sound of the sprinkler its "chit chit chitting" gently in the background and the smell of fresh cut grass is in the morning air. Oh, wait. Emma has found a nice big spot of sun to lay down in so Dutchess is following suit. The chickens have come by for a visit and get a nod from Dutchess... Emma doesnt notice as she has gone ahead for the full on, flat out sun nap. Women of leisure. I'm working on pictures.

This is actually a nice reunion for Emma and Dutchess - they were in the same pasture together at Elledge's place and when we took them to Equine Aid - Emma was pretty attached to Dutchess. In fact, I used Dutchess quite a bit to help me work with Emma. So, I am glad they are back together. Congratulations - they are two very lucky girls!

We introduced our Thoroughbred, Strikey, to the girls last night. It was a fair drama for poor Strikey because he was quite upset his previous pasture-mate was being taken away. After about an hour of fence running and vocal protesting her removal he finally tired out but after his display I think Dutchess was pretty sure he was a stallion. She turned into the "Little Alpha Mare." Striker is truly a gentleman and after he calmed he was fine but now Dutchess, 2/3rds Strikers size, had turned all hooves, ears, and dirty looks. She was now Emma's "protector." Even though Emma was very interested in visiting Strikey, Dutchess would intervene quickly and steer Emma away from this "crazy man." She was very intent on keeping Emma "safe" from Striker all day and night. My poor Striker was looking pretty dejected as he had just lost his sweet, fat, pasture honey and had her replaced by nimble vixens with slinging hooves. Later he was doing a little roll in the grass on his back and Dutchess decided to do a little ghetto "drive by" and slung a hoof by his head. Striker was like; "hey now... what's that all about?" The morning brings cooler heads ;D and Dutchess is allowing Striker to get much closer. She is figuring out he is just a big gentle giant (17.3 hands) and just wants friends, not trouble. It's funny how their personalities change when the dynamics change. We had always figured Dutchess for the shy, gentle horse and Emma the possible problem child. Nope. Emma is the sweet little curious fairy princess with the long blinking eylashes friendly as can be. Dutchess is a total sweety... until somebody she doesnt like comes near her Emma. Then watch out! That aint no ballerina move... it's freakin' kung-fu. I'm thinking of a possible re-name for Dutchess. Perhaps Quai Chang, Jet Li, or just simply Grasshopper. ;D Ha ha. Some more pictures: Dutchess and Emma Emma telling Dutchess its OK to come out of the trailer. I'm watching Striker and Emma right now out my office window and they are nibbling grass 10 ft from one another. All is good and calm at Kea's Crest.

More pictures of the girls. A little morning sunshine to warm things up. Sunshine, flower baskets, and green grass. The dining experience is all about atmosphere.

Dutchess has been doing much better the last few days. Striker has decided she is not old enough to be quite as bossy as she was so he is teaching her the finer qualities of being a benevolent Alpha. She is such a sweety to have taken on the role of Emma's protector. Now that she knows Striker is a nice boy she is relaxing on the alpha stuff.
Pirelli training starts for the girls this weekend. That should give them some new ideas to chew on. ;D

Jan tells me that yesterday Dutchess was being a very good girl. She was liking Striker enough to give him a little neck massage. Striker was a little pensive about it but he let her go ahead. Yay!!! Forward progress to being happy pasture mates.
