Dusty, reg. name "Hancock's Dusty Star", is a 10 year old QH gelding who was seized from a farm in Enumclaw along with Delilah and Scarlett. He was used as a breeding stallion previously, and was gelded today, 7/28/10. He has been boarded by the county at a boarding stable in Yelm since the January 19th seizure, up until 2 weeks ago when SAFE took him in, following the plea bargain in which the previous owner was ordered to relinquish ownership of him. During that time he was ridden in the arena and trails and turns out to have quite a bit of previous training. He was previously used as a roping horse, and has been ridden even in the company of mares and is quiet and responsive. He was a bit down on his weight upon arriving at SAFE, probably due to the fact that he was in a busy training barn with other stallions and mares in heat. Once he recovers from his castration and is able to go out with other geldings he will be a much happier boy! Dusty has had all his shots, worming and farrier care but still needs a dental float and a month or so to recover from his surgery. This is a very NICE horse, with a sweet disposition and great manners even as a stallion. He is not mouthy and has a very kind eye and sweet temperment, and he always comes running when I call him. Really nice horse and is going to make someone a fabulous pleasure or show horse. Here are some photos: Arrival at SAFE: After his castration today: Getting up after surgery:

I'm so glad he has his own thread now. I spent some time grooming him in his paddock and he fell asleep on me. He is super-cuddly and a really nice looking horse. I was pleasantly surprised at his manners, which are near perfect.
I don't see it in the features, but since Sampson is graying out and Dusty is a roan; whats the likli hood that he's the sire?

I still think it is unlikely. Sampson doesn't look like Dusty at all. And here's a blurb about Roaning I found: True roan is always present at birth, though it may be hard to see until after the foal coat sheds out. The coat may lighten or darken from winter to summer, but unlike the gray coat color, which also begins with intermixed white and colored hairs, roans do not become progressively lighter in color as they age.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roan_(horse)

I realized after we were discussing this that she (bad guy) did not have him early enough for him to have sired anything. She only owned him for a few months, which is why he was never in the terrible condition of some of the others. He came from a ranch in eastern WA - I found an ad where he was for sale around last Christmas.
Super nice horse. Whoever gets him will be very lucky. He is a sweetheart!

Cathy was there a picture with the ad? He was boarded at Czechmate for months if not years before the seizure and she supposedly bred him..........he was seized on Jan 20th and many people who knew her knew this stallion. Perhaps this is the wrong registered name??? Modified to add this is just what we were told....no one really ever knows with hoarder/neglect/abuse situations what the truth really is- but I do know for a fact he was at Czechmate in Enumclaw for months before the seizure. That is why he was in better condition.

Yeah I was under the impression she had had him for a while as well...certainly he was known in the area and quite a few people posted on facebook that they had bred to him or were owed breedings to him.

Does AQHA let you look up horses by owner? Her name is Karen Thomas(public record as she has been convicted).......

I don't have access to AQHA, and All-Breed Pedigree query doesn't list an owner, but it still looks like the name is right: www.allbreedpedigree.com/hancocks+dusty+starNote the dam's name, Skipa Briquet. That is the older mare from the seizure (the one we called Rose) and is also Scarlett's dam.

No, you cannot look up horses by owner. I WISH, as that would solve a lot of these humane case mysteries! I went back and looked and I am wrong - I thought he was for sale in December because that's back when we thought he was Me Clabber Boy, who WAS for sale in December. I think I did look him up on AQHA and he's from the same ranch though. Here's the link with the sale ad I found (scroll down, on left) www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CBgQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fassets.mediaspanonline.com%2Fprod%2F3694159%2F12042009_Horse09_A01_100.pdf&rct=j&q=%22%20%20%20%20%20(509)%20773-5684%22%20stallion&ei=JVJcTLTFKYLWtQPgptTrDw&usg=AFQjCNH-TDQfbCfbfhjLjGhG-wrvQT9kAA&sig2=jJx7NaxQONI1gI2aJQkD_Q&cad=rjaOh and those names should come as no surprise. I thought you were with me when we visited lovely and scenic Touchet, the land where apparently farriers never go and all fence is barbed wire? Anyway, AQHA names should never surprise you. Cecil's got such notables as Fran's Tar Baby, Booger's Best, McGeeHee Quarter Mare and Big Booger in his pedigree. My new mare has Old Folks, Old Red Buck, Crow and Toy Boy.

The name of my mare's dam was Disturbed Doll. Should've been a hint but give me a break, I was 12.

Dusty is all healed from his gelding (actually one of the easiest geldings we have had here...go figure!). He has pretty much lost interest in the mares as well. Our volunteer Beth (beta) has already snagged him up - she was drawn to him as soon as he arrived and soon offered to help me with his post-gelding exercise as an opportunity to get to know him. She has decided to foster him for a few months on a trial. He won't be far, I moved him today to Cascade Meadows here in Monroe where she will be working with one of the western trainers there. She's already ridden him a few times and he's just a nice, well-trained boy. Both Beth, her husband and her 9 year old stepdaughter (just starting lessons) will be enjoying Dusty, the ultimate family horse.
