Every ride, every time. That is true of my entire barn.
I am certain that insurance companies will fuel mandatory helmet wear, at least at well-run responsible shows/events, and farms offering lessons/boarding/training.
TBIs cost a lot of money to treat, and in the worst cases, long-term care is so expensive.
I was fortunate to grow up riding the Pony Club way - helmets were required. I'm pretty sure it helped my 12 yo brain when the pony I was riding slipped in the corner of the indoor and went down, rolling right over me.

While at the World Equestrian Games I was asked to join the SaddleUp SAFELY E-Advisory Group through the University of Kentucky. My first official duty is to give feedback on a set of In Case of Emergency (ICE) cards, one for the rider, one for the horse. Are there any specific things any of you would like to see on the cards? The Rider card has their info, some basic medical & two contacts The Horse card has Horse Name, Sex, Color, owner info, two contacts who have authority to make decisions about the horse & two vet contacts, Stable Manager, Farrier & Insurance I'd love some feedback before I send in mine. Also, please check out the Saddle Up Safely website at: www.ukhealthcare.uky.edu/saddleup/index.aspThey welcome injury stories and will post them if you care to share in order to raise awareness for safety.

I went headfirst into an oxer and broke my helmet in half. I escaped with minor bruises and a damaged ego. That'll teach you not to get ahead of the horse and that helmets are essential; don't need a $500 GPA to save your noggin as the one I broke was a $30 Troxel.

I had a very strict bringing up around horses.. I did Pony Club til I was 18, and never even thought twice about getting on a horse without a helmet. The only time I have not worn a helmet, was getting on an OTTB bareback with halter/lead rope.. and he bucked me off before I made it to his back. lol I was so stupid. EVERY RIDE, EVERY TIME is also my motto! I love to see people with helmets. All my neighbors do not wear helmets, and I spent the summer riding with them, and saw afew get bucked off. The kids ride OTTB every where, and don't wear helmets. I just cringe. I give my son pony rides every now and then, and he even wears a helmet with me leading him.

Riders4helmets to Host Helmet Safety Symposium Presented by SUCCEED® www.riders4helmets.com/?p=1548Helmet safety topics to be discussed by leading equestrians and representatives from equestrian organizations and corporations. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Media Contact: Lyndsey White 859-859-420-1006 lwhite@freedomhealthllc.com Aurora, OH (December 8th, 2010)—Riders4Helmets, the helmet awareness campaign founded by Jeri Bryant and equine health product SUCCEED® Digestive Conditioning Program®, will be hosting a “by invitation only” Helmet Safety Symposium. The event will take place January 8th, 2011, at the White Horse Tavern, Wellington, FL, from 9am to 6pm. The symposium is sponsored by Troxel Helmets, Charles Owen Helmets, Tipperary Helmets and Samshield Helmets. The Helmet Safety Symposium has been organized to bring together representatives from various corners of the equestrian world to discuss the importance of wearing helmets, rider safety and to improve helmet designs, rules and more. The event will provide a series of panel discussions throughout the day. Many in attendance will also sit on the panels, including leading equestrians, representatives from the helmet safety testing authorities, helmet manufacturers, equestrian organizations including USEF and the FEI, and neurosurgeons. The chair of the meeting will be Dr. Craig Ferrell, physician to the United States Equestrian Team. “We are very excited to be part of the Riders4Helmets campaign and to see it continue to expand,” said Lyndsey White, representative from Freedom Health, LLC, makers of SUCCEED® and co-manager of the Riders4Helmets campaign. “Since Courtney King Dye’s tragic accident earlier this year, awareness of the importance of helmet safety has grown to the point where we can now bring together different individuals, corporations and organizations all in one place to discuss the issues and, hopefully, being to change things for the better.” Symposium panel topics will include the following: The Incidence of Head Injury in Equestrian Sport, Concussion and Brain Injury Mechanisms, History of Helmet Designs and Standards, History of Rules Related to Wearing Helmets, Helmet Design, Helmet Standards, and, Rules Regarding when Helmets Should be Required. While attendance to the symposium is strictly by invitation only, a limited number of auditing places have been made available to interested equestrians at a cost of $75.00 per person. To sign up as an auditor for the symposium, please visit www.riders4helmets.com. The auditing fee includes a buffet luncheon and cocktail reception that will follow the symposium. “I am looking forward to this important discussion and the growing awareness of head protection by USEF and FEI” said Dr. Richard Timms, Chairman of Troxel Helmets, one of the event’s sponsors. “USEF’s and FEI’s positions supply leadership examples to the remainder of the equestrian world. The history and evolving knowledge related to head injury and head protection supports our timely attention to the issue.” “We look forward to participating in the helmet safety symposium” said Julien Lecomte of Samshield Helmets. “Bringing together key individuals in the equestrian world and representatives of the various organizations will hopefully move everyone in the same direction with regards to rider safety.” “Tipperary Equestrian is looking forward to sharing ideas and collaborating with this professional group on a shared mission in keeping top athletes and beginners riding safe and having fun” said Leslie Newton of Phoenix Performance Products (Tipperary Helmets).” Riders4Helmets was founded in early 2010 after Olympic dressage rider Courtney King Dye was seriously injured in a riding accident. King Dye, who remained in a coma for a month following her accident, was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident and is currently undergoing rehabilitation. Jeri Bryant donated her helmet campaign t-shirts (featuring the slogan “Strap One On –Everyone’s Doing it”) to SUCCEED’s eBay store to raise funds for King Dye, and a partnership was formed, resulting in the Riders4Helmets campaign. For more information on the Riders4Helmets campaign or the Helmet Safety Symposium, visit www.riders4helmets.com or contact Lyndsey White at lwhite@freedomhealthllc.com. SUCCEED Digestive Conditioning Program is an official product sponsor of USEF, USDF and USEA. It is produced and distributed exclusively by Freedom Health, LLC, of Aurora, Ohio. The company is focused on finding, perfecting and delivering superior, innovative products that address real and significant health-related issues for animals and the people who care for them.

My Grandson, Daemon, had a chance encounter with the "real" Santa the other night while on a Christmas Cruise around Lake Union. His adventure included pirates, lots of lit up boats and a once in a lifetime chance to get a one-on-one conversation with the Man, himself....of the many questions regarding the business of Christmas the six year old had stored up in that amazing brain of his, *Helmet Safety* was one of the most heavy on his mind....so I thought I'd share my blog post. I strive to protect his brilliant mind by instilling helmet safety during his equine and wheeled riding adventures. Apparently it got through... hoofprintsacrossmyheart.blogspot.com/2010/12/holiday-helmet.html

Riders4Helmets is having a contest!!! This was recently posted on their facebook page: "Holiday contest! Send an email to lyndscw@hotmail.com with your helmet wearing stories (anything from an accident you had in which you sustained a head injury to how wearing a helmet saved your life etc). The best three stories will go on the website as posts and the top story will win a prize. Entry must include a photo and your full name. Ends December 31st 2010"Share your story and you could win a prize! At the barn my daughter works at they not only wear helmets for daily rides but, when starting new horses, both the rider and grounds person wear helmets and the rider also wears an eventing vest. I think that's fantastic. I've had several conversations with folks about the example trainers & competitors are. When they're riding with helmets it's normal...or even "cool"...to a young or new rider...or even to an experienced rider who's contemplated the consequences of getting injured. But when they ride without it they can send a very dangerous message...

I'm off to San Diego tomorrow to pick up our helmet donations (and a good excuse to go home for the day!) but I thought I'd share today's post from Riders4Helmets: www.riders4helmets.com/?p=1968I know it's a repeat for some of you, and it certainly is for me, but ya kinda have to love those moments when you see a photo and think it looks like your horse...and then you figure out IT IS!! Just another reminder of why even everyday horse activities can be dangerous... ...PLUS it mentions SAFE and the 2008 Benefit Horse Show

Big news in the Dressage world: Starting 3/1/11, the USEF will make helmets mandatory in national level dressage classes (meaning Intro - Fourth Level), in all young horse classes and for all riders under 18 regardless of level (meaning national plus FEI levels). And note that this applies any time one is on a horse at a show--warmup, riding back to the barn--all the time. Here's a link to the Proposed Change doc, which has been approved by the USEF: www.usef.org/documents/ruleChanges/313-10.pdf
