Well JR has settled in very well at my place. Parelli is loaning him a blanket as it has been freezing at my place this week and poor JR has no fat to help him stay warm. He seems to like his new blanket and is very interested in all of the horses and dogs at my place. He even tolerated my loony Doberman leaping up and licking his nose! He is very kind and sweet and I think this weekend I will introduce Heidi to his pasture so he will have a buddy. Right now they are turned out next to each other. JR is not fond of having his feet picked out and soaked however!! He was good for it yesterday morning, okay for it last night and this morning he had decided that his feet should remain rooted to the ground......whew I got a workout just lifiting and picking his feet! The good news is that while they are stil extremely tender, they have dried out quite a bit. They still smell but it is not overpowering and I think they will come around quickly.

LOL Oh yea, I forgot to mention that part, huh? Yes, JR is an expert and NOT PICKING UP HIS FEET. I broke out into a sweat a couple times just trying to life his front feet. Goober. But that's really his only objection. Other than that, he's good at letting them soak. Silly guy! Thanks for taking such good care of him!

That could be related to his feet hurting. I had a mare whose feet were overly long (due to a previous farrier saying "she caaaaan't pick up her feet" ... vet proclaimed that to be b.s., new farrier had no trouble doing her) and my vet said they hurt and that's why she wouldn't pick them up. I had the same thing - I couldn't pick her feet. It was like trying to move a giant redwood tree. They were ROOTED!
Feet are now done, and mare is picking them up beautifully. Most likely when his feet start to feel better, he will become more cooperative like mine did.

I hope so! And I bet you are right Cat! But he is REALLY good at keeping them stuck to the ground LOL I kept cracking up at him and when he would pick them up for me I would give him a pony cookie so hopefully he will get the concept soon!

I don't remember where I saw this - but you know how we were all taught to squeeze just above the back of the fetlock for the pick up cue - well, (and sorry if I saw this here on this board and am just repeating but...) what I do when Redmond is rooted to the ground is I sort of tweak (twist just a little) his chestnut and WA-LA - up it comes. I think because that is such a wierd feeling for them - they try and get it to stop by lifting their leg up and it DOES!

Yes, the chestnut-tweaking trick does usually do the trick!

WLF, that was very kind of Parelli. Did you try squeezing the chestnuts on his fronts? You probably already know that trick, so forgive me for my unsolicited suggestion.

Actually I was using my hoof pick right behind his fetlock....something my farrier showed me.....but you can bet I will be using the chestnut tweak tonite LOL thanks Ladies...I have seen it done before but all of my horses have their feet up and waiting for me so I am out of practice with one that stands ROOTED to the ground. Little Heidi was bad when she first came but she is so little you can lean on her and she will pick it right up.....for as skinny as he is JR is REALLY good at standing sqare- his frame is pretty big so he was able to mock me and my pathetic efforts pretty easily....the funny thing is once he decided to give them to you he did it pretty easily so I do think there is a sense of humor involved on his part LOL

Jolene's dad also taught me the trick for hinds - you pinch (gently) right at the point of the hock - works like a charm.
But I agree, maybe his feet hurt so much that he doesn't want to put that extra weight on the supporting legs when he picks one up...
Thank you for all of your time and effort, WLF and Julianne!

LOL thanks Ladies...I have seen it done before but all of my horses have their feet up and waiting for me so I am out of practice with one that stands ROOTED to the ground. Oh that reminds me of another funny Redmond story - even tho he will root his good front foot to ground so he doesn't have to bear weight on his bad leg - all the others are SO UP FOR GRABS that he picks them up automatically depending on where my farrier is passing by - so if she keeps walking back and forth he looks like he is dancing. You almost feel compelled to at least go hold the foot for a second so he is not disappointed! ;D
