He's such a good ol' fart! I've been noticing him getting a little bit more "senile" these days...it kind of cracks me up, so we just take our time...however, he definitely is head horse here and gets his respect from all the youngins...

It is with much sadness that I report that JR has been laid to rest today. It was a very tough decision for Mara - JR had days when he was bright and full of energy, and days when his severely dropped back was causing him pain and making him struggle to get to his feet after lying down or rolling. Mara made the appointment for him last May, but after starting him on daily bute he seemed to rally a bit, so she decided to give him the summer. After a while, even on two bute a day, the bad days started to outweigh the good ones and Dr. Hannah felt it was time. I had a chance to see Mara at a horse show last weekend and we talked a lot about this difficult decision. I know she is at peace with it, but it's just never easy, especially when you love so much.
On behalf of SAFE I want to thank my very dear friend Mara for fostering and ultimately adopting our beloved JR. She gave him a wonderful life these past few years - spoiled him rotten. In turn JR taught her son Micah all about the special bond between horse and human, and how to respect and appreciate our horse friends even as they age and lose their "usefulness". I have known Mara for 15 years now....any horse who ends up at her farm is a lucky horse indeed. Thank you Mara for being a good steward to this sweet old horse who had been through so much, and for having the courage to be there for JR as he leaves this world. We share your sorrow but also are comforted by the knowledge that JR is no longer feeling any pain or discomfort.

I'm so sorry, we both know darn well when we adopt these fabulous oldies our days with them are limited, however the incredible love that forms breaks our heart when they leave us. Jr was a wonderful horse that spent his last years being loved. Thank you and rest well sweet JR.
