Unfortunately, Dexter is not working out with his adoptive home. They live on a property that is right by a busy highway. Their fencing is safe but not electric and for some reason Dexter has been repeatedly trying to get out. He cut his face open resulting in a big vet bill (he's fine now) and has damaged several metal panels. He has horses next to him and she even tried putting another horse with him but he just keeps trying to get out. It's strange, as he never tested the fencing here at all, but we have mostly hot wire and he respects that, so he may just need to be kept in electric fence of some type.
On a positive note, they have been riding him on trails 3-4 times a week and he's been absolutely great to ride. If you missed out on Dexter before, now is your chance to own a great family horse!! He's being moved temporarily to a friend's house up in the Arlington/Stanwood area so please email me if you are interested in seeing him. His adoption fee will once again be $600.

What a bummer! Is there any possibility of running a strand of hot tape on the existing fence to make it less attractive to challenge?

I got the sense from Peggy that she just doesn't trust him at this point and is too worried he will get out on the road and hurt somebody or himself.

That's too bad If I hadn't just gone and picked up my new mare I'd be all over this one. I'm sure it won't be long before he finds another home.

Dexter is already in a new foster-to-adopt situation! Wish him luck that this works out well!

Dexter's adoption is not going to work out for this family although they are going to continue to foster him up in Stanwood for a while. The family is just a little too beginner for a young horse. Therefore this nice boy is available again, spread the word!

Dexter reminds me of my bay gelding who was also an escape artist. We used to get calls that he'd gotten out of the pasture and found no signs of struggle. No broken posts, rails. No sign of his hair rubbed off. We finally realized he must have jumped the fence. It took time for him to settle into his new digs, and he eventually gave us no trouble. A few years later, my family moved to another state and after we got him settled into his new boarding facility, guess what? He jumped the fence and was found three miles away in a farmer's yard. Some horses are keen on leaving 'for home' when they are brought to a strange, new place. How long has Dexter been in this new facility? It 's going to take time, but being near a busy highway is not worth the risk of waiting. I agree, a hot tape should be placed.

Hi there - Dexter was moved several weeks ago from the farm he tried to escape from. He is completely at ease at his current foster location and isn't testing the fences there. It seems he was just very unhappy at his last home for some reason.

Maybe Dexter wasn't confortable being near busy highway? Gosh, he is sooo my dream horse and I would love to adopt him if I can. However our property is not fenced and we have no barn for him to live in. On top of that my experience with horse is miniscule (took riding lesson 290 years ago and did few trail riding). I LOVE horses but that doesn't necessarily mean I can provide him best forever home due to my lack of experience and knowledge of the animal.I often think about volunteering so I can help taking care of the horses and learn about them though.
