I'm sure this was a very difficult decision to make, but it sounds like the Board put a lot of thought into it. I think you did everything you could for her and it's a wise decision to euthanize her under the circumstances.
It would be nice to believe that all horses can be rehabilitated, but unfortunately that's not always the case. If anything, I have more respect for SAFE for recognizing when it's time to let go.

I wouldn't want any horse to have to endure the mental and physical challenges that she has. With great love for the horse, herself, I support the decision & understand the personal, emotional, hardship that it took to come to it by the SAFE Board of Directors.
She has been well loved by SAFE, it's volunteers and supporters and that is a great deal more than she had before she came to us. The greatest gift we can give her is dignity.

I am very sorry for all at SAFE. I know this is not something you decided lightly, and knowing it is the right thing to do does not make it easier. I cannot think of a better home or group of people she could have had for the last couple of years and am happy she ended her days with you and not in the misery she was living in before becoming a SAFE horse.
Godspeed Little Miss.

I'm so sorry to hear this. I know SAFE has gone above and beyond to her every chance. I wish you all some peace tomorrow as you deal with this sad day.

Oh, so soon. I was hoping to say goodbye to her tonight when I come out. It's for the best, though; she is not a happy horse

Sorry Allison. It was either today or not for another two weeks as Dr. Kelly is going out of town and then I am, and I think now that we have made the decision we'd rather get it over with. It's really hard taking care of her right now, I feel awful and keep second guessing the decision. I don't think we could take two more weeks of that. Bonnie's coming over and we will both be with her, and give her a big tub of treats and attention. She will be sedated first and hopefully it will be very peaceful.

Oh, good. I am glad you will not be alone. Don't second guess, Lil Miss is not a happy horse and she likely would never be. I'll miss her sweet little face too. Well, when her ears weren't pinned.

Jaime- this is the right decision. Don't second guess yourself. I'm glad Bonnie will be there with you. Thank you for taking such good care of LM and giving her a peaceful end.

Little Miss was let go this afternoon. I made her a huge tub of grain, carrots and cookies and she munched on that while Dr. Kelly heavily sedated her and Bonnie and I pet her and told her she was a good girl as she left this world. I hope she is running pain-free in a pasture, perhaps with Wishes, Lily, Ella and the others who have had to leave us.

The horse that you are describing sounds nothing like the one I rode a few years ago and liked very much. Unfortunately, when you take horses from these neglect situations, even the best of care does not guarantee that you can undo the permanent damage of years of deprivation. I just went through what sounds like exactly the same situation with one of mine. I kept trying with her through her striking at people, body slamming people, kicking someone in the stomach and more. She finally ran through fence this week, not for the first time, and seriously injured herself and another horse. I made the call to put her to sleep. She could be fine but when she was bad she was scary and what you are left with is the knowledge that even if YOU can handle the horse and avoid the bad behavior, none of these horses can live in a world where only one person handles them. We all work, travel, etc. A horse that is this dangerous to go out in the field with and just do routine tasks around is a horse that is an appropriate euthanasia candidate. There is nothing wrong or unethical about it, and I'll probably blog about this topic in depth soon.

Thanks Cat and I am sorry for your loss today also. Yes, I think back to the mare she was when she came to us and still don't understand what happened. There was always some grouchiness in her but she was much more amenable to being ridden and worked with than she became over time. That's why we were so sure there must have been a physical cause for it, but we could never pin her behavior issues on one specifically. My guess is she was generally uncomfortable, due to lack of sleep, her knees and feet hurting, along with being sort of temperamental mare, and she became less compliant over time.

I so wish I would have known this was going to happen, I would have spent some more time with my favorite girl yesterday!! Of course, had I known, I'm sureI would have been a total wreck. I guess I should count myself lucky that I never saw the side of Miss that you've described. She was always very sweet and happy to see me. Yesterday, she was nuzzling me and putting her head on my shoulder, she seemed so happy and I was so very glad to see her that way. I am so incredibly sad that I won't get another chance to love on her, give her treats and even push her out of the way while I'm cleaning her paddock, but I'm very glad that my last memory of her will be of the way she was yesterday, happy and loving. Maybe somehow she knew that soon she wouldn't be in pain any longer, would be able to roam free and would be happy in horse heaven. I will miss her more than I can put into words, I know that I'm not alone in that and I'm sorry for the loss we're all feeling. RIP Miss, you were loved by many and I'm so glad that's how you got to spend the last few years of your life!

I'll remember you at the 2008 SAFE Show as a multiple ribbon winner...and even a lead line pony...
I'm glad you got a sunny day, yummy treats and the love of those who've known you the longest. I pray you know you're free, loved & will be missed.
Good Bye Little Miss
