Ok, he's up. Many thanks to Valerie for rushing over to help me get him up, he was just too heavy for me to lift by myself. His temp was low again - 97.5. He's now in with Phoenix with all the heat lamps on both of them, and has some electrolytes in him to help get him drinking. It doesn't help that its a windy cold day today, and usually the wind comes from the east and the stalls block it but it is coming from the west and blowing right in the stalls.

Just a thought - I know they're past weanling age but what about trying some milk replacer with these guys, just for the sake of getting calories into them? I KNOW that stuff must taste great as the broodmares would just about knock me down trying to get to it when I was hand-feeding Frankie. Also that way they are getting extra fluids into their body. Same reasoning as giving a cat who won't eat Rebound (it's like kittycat "Ensure" - tastes like tuna milk and will get almost any cat to give it a try no matter how rotten they feel).

Well, the good news about Sinatra is even when he was down he was still nibble nibbling at hay around him. And when pulled to his feet, he put his head down and just kept eating so his appetite still seems to be good. But man, these little guys eat slower than molasses in January. It's one wisp here, 2 wisps there. And chew your food 50 times before swallowing.
Gosh I love these little buggers.

Has Dr Hannah recommended any grain?, when I had the neighbors foal, I feed Allegra baby, its a complete feed and the pellets are tiny.

We just started them on LMF Development last night. One cup, twice a day, working up from that. Sinatra loves his, Phoenix was less than enthused but did eat it this morning.

How is our little man tonight? I almost wish he was small enough to sleep in your mud room...are he and Phoenix sharing a stall tonight? Can I send a really thick, warm foal blanket for both of them? Too bad you can't bundle them up and stick them at the foot of your bed!!

Sinatra got a little massage today from Janice who stopped by to help out, to help increase circulation in his extremeties, and she said he seemed to enjoy it. Both he and Phoenix were down for the 10:30 feeding, but Phoenix got up and Sinatra stayed down. I gave him his ulcer meds and electrolytes lying down and let him stay down because he had been up all day, and needed a rest, and he was lying near the heat lamps and seemed warm enough.
Mel, we got a bunch of stuff donated from the 4H tack sale that I haven't even had a chance to go through yet. Let me see what we have and let you know. We could still use a couple better foal blankets but we do have blankets on everyone right now. I'll let you know.

Okay, it's a deal...I'll wait to see what you need. Thanks!! Also...and I think this might be a really stupid question...but can you wrap a foal's legs or are they too young for that? I could send wraps and bandages for that if you think it would help them keep warmer. Don't laugh, but we wrap our horses legs here in LA when the temps are in the low 40's/high 30's at night. My 20 year old is pretty creaking when in gets cooler, so the wraps do help him.

schwung....I will be PMing you a name and number of a man I used to work for who is deeply involved with LMF. His brother acutally helped develop the company when they started out, and this man works directly with Dr. Durran (sp?) with Kentucky Equine Research who researches and develops the formulas for LMF. You may already have all the LMF info, but he is an excellent resource for nutrition in even the most difficult cases. Just thought you may be interested.

Cute pictures of Sinatra, Phoenix & Kokomo today: blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/horsebytes/archives/134175.aspBackstory on the photo op: A canine quintet was putting on a concert - actually, more like a shout-down - and the boys huddled for safety. I dropped the manure fork and ran for the camera... They were already relaxing by the time I got there and soon were scattered over the pasture again.
