I have always made a grass pellet mash with cool calories for my older horses, just as a supplement to keep weight good. However, now it has come time for Sione to be on all mash diet for hay replacement and I'm a little confused about how much to use. She currently gets 3lbs dry weight, and not sure what is weighs after soaking, but that is just her lunch. Her normal diet now is 2.5lb Nutrena sr, cool cals, plus 1 8oz cup of Omolene 400 morning, lunch is the soaked alf/orch pellets, dinner is the same as her breakfast, free choice alf/orch hay mix and pasture during daytime. I need to replace all hay with soaked pellets how much is enough, I'm not sure. Thanks for your input.

I do not know what will be necessary for Sione but I can tell you what I have fed my old fart horses that were on all mash......
Sarge gets 4lbs dry weight beet pulp and 4 lbs orchard grass pellets. He also gets 1lb rice bran to balance the phosphorous/calcium, Legacy joint supplement, Equerry's vitamin supplement. All of that is fed in a 5 gallon painters bucket filled to the top with warm water and topped with sliced apples(he can gum them) He gets that twice a day and also grazes all day long but he does not eat the grass........just gums it and spits it out. There are grass quids everywhere LOL
My 1/2 arab gelding gets the same except twice the rice bran and twice the hay pellets with free choice hay- he was starving and is still playing catch up.
Sarge is an insanely easy keeper so he may not be a good reference.......

There are grass quids everywhere LOL I wondered what those gummed-up wet wads of grass were called. Quids -- Perfect. Sorry for being out of touch. We've been fighting a case of Lymphangitis in both hind legs, an infection in the front right and abscess in the front left (at the same time) and a job change. Things are looking better - except my bank account. Does Sarge need a trim?

Don't most bags of hay pellets I feed have a "conversion chart" as such to tell how much pellets are equivalent to the amount of hay you feed?

Yes Steve he does need a trim! Your poor horse! Is it the big guy or your little one with all the issues?
