Doris has retired and moved to a retirement community as I heard it. Her daughter (Nancy? not sure on that!!) audited the books and may have all the information but I think Doris has stepped as far away as she can from racing and horses. I don't know how to get in contact with either one sorry

Great news!! Karen Thomas has plead guilty to one count of 1ST DEGREE Animal Cruelty and one count of 2nd degree Animal Cruelty!!! All the horses have been signed over. I am waiting to find out the exact date of the sentencing but it will be in the next week or two. A big win for the horses and all the other animals that suffered in this case!!

I love that people are being held accountable and actually being punished instead of getting a slap on the wrist. Hopefully this is a continuing trend toward punishing people for their creulty and neglect. Any idea where the rest of her horses have gone? Permanent homes or another rescue?

OK I jumped the gun a bit on this one. She did NOT sign the horses over yet and still is hoping to keep them. However, chances are slim to none that the judge will let that happen, so we just have to hang tight until the sentencing. As for the other horses, the two mares will stay with Rancho Laguna (where they are now) and the stallion (who will be gelded as soon as the county has ownership) may be coming to SAFE.

Hello. I am new to this group. I wanted to share a happy ending. One of the mares that went to Rancho Laguna was adopted by my family and she is now the partner of my nine year old daughter. She is a beautiful and wonderful horse and we love her tremendously. She has the kindest soul and just melts with the loves and scratches we give her constantly. My daughter is looking forward to starting her in some horse shows this year. We live next to miles of trails and she is an awesome trail horse. Looking at her now, you would not know that just a year ago, she was almost dead. I thought you would appreciate hearing of a true gift we recieved out of the horror of animal cruelty. Keep up the great work!!!
