Sara- Is this the one you got? www.horse.com/Drain-Plug-Deicer-BEW11.html Jaime I was going to get two more drain plug de-icers because I think that makes 4 total for you, but then I thought you might rather have 1 universal de-icer and 1 drain plug?? Let me know... they are the same price.

I'm confused...isn't the Universal de-icer also a drain plug de-icer? I really have no idea.

Sorry, utility de-icer. www.horse.com/Aluminum-Utility-De-Icer-BEW01.html It looks like you can use it to thaw something (anything) already frozen. Not sure if it would be handy or more of a pain than it's worth.

I think the ones that are actually designed to go into the drain plugs would be the best bet for a start. I might want to consider something different for my smaller water tubs that don't have drain plugs but my concern is the horses will mess with them, as they tend to get bored in their paddocks and then start destroying things (mostly fences, but I could see them playing with de-icers as well).

Wow, thanks so much Sara!!! Bring on the freezing temps! (well not really, but at least now we are prepared!) Well you know, now this means it will not freeze again all year- which is awesome, right? And totally worth the $30/unit!

I just pulled the tank closer to the fence so the back side of the tank was under the lower electric fence wire by a few inches. If your fence is good that'll do the trick generally. But... if the water level is allowed to get low curious horses can start playing with the part of the heaters cord that becomes exposed along the tank wall. So these work but have the potential to become a horse toy more so than the drain plug type.

So, does SAFE have any use for the floating de-icers? That's what I was going to send. If you can't use it let me know and I'll keep it for a spare. :-)

I could probably use it for a horse like Bucky that wouldn't want to expend the energy playing with it, but not a horse like Rhythm, he'd demolish it.

I have a floating de-icer, and have no problem with it. My VERY mouthy WB plays with everythign, but he leaves the floating thing in the water alone. His new thing is playing with the caps on the t-posts and pulling them all off. My husband last winter, wrapped the water pipe, in foam, and then wire netting (thinking the horses would leave it alone) NOPE, Phil has destroyed my hubby's wrap job. Thats where the nickname Phil the pill has come in. lol

Definitely go with the drain plug heaters. My ponies LOVE to play with the floating ones. They pull them out, toss them around, stomp on them, etc.
The really nice thing about tank heaters is that the horses drink more. Some horses, my gelding is one, don't like icy cold water. I need the heater to make sure he drinks enough in the winter in addition to keeping the tank from freezing over.
