It is true, I mostly blanket because I worry that my babies are cold.

I'm a blanket beginner here. I'm needing to start blanketing my 32 year old Arab. So--what's the difference between a rain sheet, a mid weight, and a heavy weight? What do I need for my old girl? She grows a nice thick coat, but I want to blanket her at night because she gets so stiff. She's not stalled, but in a paddock with a very large totally wind and rain protected shelter that she can get under.

A midweight blanket would probably be fine for her. A rain sheet is usually a waterproof blanket with no lining (or filling). A mid weight blanket is also a waterproof outside (although they come non waterproof, but for inside only obviously) with a polyfill stuffing of a medium warmth and weight. Most horses here do very well in a mid weight blanket. If it gets super cold, you can add another blanket underneath. A heavy weight blanket is also good for extremely cold weather. If your horse grows a great winter coat, I would just stick to a mid weight and double up in the extreme weather as needed. As many here have stated, it's the rain and wet that keeps a horse from being able to stay warm. You don't want them to get too hot in their blanket either. I can't imagine being too warm in my coat and not being able to take it off!

I have the SLT contour blanket. I lied... it's only 1200 denier (Lisam- the higher this number, the more durable your blanket is going to be- don't get below a 600d) but it's 300g polyfill. www.statelinetack.com/item/defender-premier-quick-clip-blanket/SLT900590/cat- I was looking at those! I was thinking the sleazy sheet sounded like a good idea. schwung- Good to know! We're even more mild here than where you are! That makes me feel TONS better!
