In case you all didn't read the motions from the last AHA Board of Directors meeting,.. "BOARD ACTION ON HUMANE TREATMENT OF EQUINE BREEDS & LIVESTOCK Below is a board motion that came about as the AHA President, Lance Walters, has been elected to the BOD of the American Horse Council. The Council will be taking up consideration of possible law changes and it was felt that Lance should have the consensus and direction of the AHA Board. Whereas, There is great concern regarding the humane treatment of all equine breeds and livestock, the Arabian Horse Association and the Arabian Horse Foundation actively supports equine rescue along with responsible livestock and horse ownership and breeding; Therefore, Be It Moved, After extensive research as a Board of Directors we support the reopening of equine processing plants for horses in the U.S. We believe the reestablishment of the humane processing of horses is in the best interest of the horse and livestock community, and, therefore, direct our AHA President, Lance Walters, to support the reopening of U.S. equine processing facilities. Motion Passed Unanimously. (Motion #16-5/16/09-BOD)" --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I urge anyone who owns an Arabian or Arabian cross horse to contact AHA and voice their oposition to this shameful motion. We need to change their mind, not just withdraw from the breed association of the horses we love. The board of directors actions do not directly reflect the memberships wishes. AHA has completely FAILED in several areas regarding the welfare and humane treatment of animals.
It was such an incredible pain in the butt to get Khramer's papers. Even though I sent everything in, I had to check on them about 10 times before they finally sent them. In those situations, shouldn't they try harder? It's like getting Ariel papered... it's like they don't care.
Shoeing restrictions is another thing they should be whacked over the head with. And the entire practice of showing halter; I can't tell you guys how many horses are scarred physically and mentally from it.
Arabians are such an incredible breed and so loving . It's a shame that the association that is suppose to represents them tends to betray the breed.

Yep. And they wonder why so many people "leave" their breed t switch to something else. Or just give up showing...

Well I wanted to sign the petition but I am not a member of the AHA. However, it seems like I should have a voice considering we have rescued Arabians in our care that "breeders" are clamoring to adopt from us to use as broodmares to produce yet more arabians. *sigh*

However, it seems like I should have a voice considering we have rescued Arabians in our care that "breeders" are clamoring to adopt from us to use as broodmares to produce yet more arabians. *sigh* If you want to sign the petition, I have a feeling that AHA would waive the membership fee for a rescue. They work well with rescues in many cases. Also, as far as AHA knows, you do not have any Arabian since they are still registered to Elledge. Realistically, if someone down the road adopts them, and has them bred, they could get Jean's signature and have that foal registered. HAving the horse's papers (JAsmine and Amber at least) would be beneficial. As a matter of fact, if you are worried about breeding, you don't need to adopt them out with papers; just send new owners copies. That way they (at least Amber) can still shown everything other than "owner to ride" classes at "A" shows. Local shows and CTR's just require a copy of the papers, and sometimes the signature of the owner. |

The Eledge Arabs aren't the only Arabs in SAFE's possession. While he isn't a mare, so breeding isn't an issue, but aren't Krabask's papers in SAFE's name? If so, as an "owner", Jaime certainly has every right to express her opinion to the AHA.

Nope. Krabask is not in SAFE's name. I don't know if they even have the papers... but he would also be worth getting. I know he's an older guy, but he still deserves his identity as well. Who knows, maybe he can do walk/trot with a younger rider?

Honestly, Barbara, if you think it is so important that SAFE spend their donations intended for the rehabilitation of rescue horses on registration transfer fees, then I propose you donate to SAFE for those fees and also go through the hoops of getting the papers transferred for us.

As a matter of fact, I both posted on several of the horses' threads and sent you emails, Jamie. I am still more than happy to help with obtaining the papers, and the transfer fee for regi papers is still waived (at least when I spoke with them) to rescues. I spent quite a bit of time on this, because I felt it was important. I am sorry that you feel you need to respond back at me with that kind of response.

Really? All the help I have seen offered is pointing to a phone number and who to talk to. I spent a significant amount of time with the AHSA and haven't gotten anywhere, they are requiring court records and other documentation and Dutchess and Emma's adopters are working on it for us. Based on other's experiences with the AHA, it has NOT been easy. Frankly, its not high on the priority list with 17 horses here to care for, a full-time job and a teenager to deal with. We are in the business of rescue and rehabilitation, and as I have said, we will help where we can with the papers if someone wants them, but its not going to be our priority. I'm more than happy to have a volunteer try and track it down for us and if you can make the papers transfer, great!

I still stand behind what I wrote.
Now that I know how to do it, its not bad. It should be easier to do than it is, since the horses are DNA typed. But AHA isn't using the tools that they have. Yes, I had to call. Yes, I learned stuff in the process. You have to keep in mind that I was also unsure of what horse I had since I got two different identities and his markings aren't what they look like on the papers.
I emailed you all the paperwork, but I also offered to help. Frankly, I think there are several people on the board that would have offered to help as well. There are a lot of good people here that would like to help but can't necessarily make it out to do site checks or work in Monroe. It's really just a matter of asking. I don't think anyone expects you to do everything personally, but you are the one (along with the board) that makes the decisions. You can't get papers for horses without an organization's go-ahead. I would have done all the papers at the same time had I had that. I already had a letter from my attorney, and the rest of the items were simple. Along with the waived fee, all that was missing was photos of the markings on the horses at a stamp to send the whole thing to AHA.
As far as your comment, delsal (and I hope you don't take this as a "personal attack"), I hope that papers on these horses does make them more adoptable. The reality is that SAFE has a lot of horses right now, so if there's something out there that they can have for free and can increase the chance of a good home... why not pursue it?
And yes. As far as welfare of animals, I think AHA failed. But there are plenty of people (like me) who speak out and don't buy into it. The reality is, it takes people in numbers to make an association change.
