Since he's been rescued I'm giving him a thread of his own too... We haven't been updating about Basil too much since we thought we had a new permanent situation for him & I figured that would be the last update. But...that hasn't worked out the way I'd like and for now he has a home with me. Officially, I'm still "fostering" him, mostly so I don't have to report to my husband how many horses we actually have but it leaves my options open should a much better home come up for him. I had tried to distance myself from him a little bit emotionally since I was convinced he wouldn't be mine for very long. This week I just gave in and he's getting the full Jet's Horse treatment. Last week I had a bit of a disappointment when a "show" home came out to see him. They thought he was "cute" and well put together but *gasp* he was Roaning on his shoulder!! I have not heard from them since and I guess we're better off that he didn't go somewhere that his future was based on his looks. I happen to think he's very very handsome...so roaning, schmoaning...he's still incredibly gorgeous! That mane is to-die-for thick and has beautiful coloring...I know women who pay big bucks for that kind of highlighting!! and then ...my farrier was out on Friday and did everyone's feet. Basil was getting his back foot done and lost his balance a little. The farrier stood up and said "did you see that?" .... I thought I was in trouble for my naughty gelding not standing perfectly still...but no, he was getting praised for NOT pulling his foot away from the farrier even though he had lost his balance! yay! The farrier also asked what I was doing with Basil and I told him I was still looking for a good home for him and he looked me straight in the eye and said "You should keep him!" I thought he was kidding cuz he's always teasing me about something when it comes to horses but apparently he meant it. He said this horse would take me farther than Coconut, who he happens to really like, and said he could go to the "big show" but even when I explained that I'm not THAT kind of show home...and that all I'd really ever want is a good trail horse he still said this IS that horse and he'll do whatever you want him to, you'll just have the best quality trail horse out there! He advised me that I won't get many opportunities to get a horse of this quality again...especially the way I did. So for now....I'm taking care of him...treating him like he's mine and will register him next month. I'll keep an open mind if the perfect opportunity comes up but it's hard not to dream about his future...with me/without me... Unless I hear something better, he'll be Macho Bar NoneAnd today's achievements: Being completely hosed down for a bath....perfectly still...and learning to drink from a hose which totally cracked me up!

We finally got pasture board and a baby sitter for Basil today...right at home! Our Barn Owner opened up his front pasture for the summer and placed Basil and a horse named Jingles together up there. Every time I saw them, they were running or eating side by side. I'd say they are great pasture-mates so far. I got what I wanted for him and it didn't even take a trailer ride to get him there. Jingles hates being alone and has had a revolving door of pasture-mates over the last 6 months. In fact, I think it's only been Sasha, last November and Sugar in December/January before she started her progression to her current pasture next to Coconut. I think it's a perfect solution for both Basil & Jingles and I feel much less stressed about what to do with him. This solves many issues, at least for the summer while we have the use of this pasture. Winter....is a different story! They like their pretty green grass in front of their house Who wouldn't? I don't blame them a bit...but for now, Basil has a pasture to run in and a friend to play Horse with

Oh Jeanette- we all know that's what you wear when you ride Coconut off into the sunset with Jimmy Buffett playing in the background... I must add that Mr. Basil has been such a sweetheart since his new life in the pasture- he is a happy boy! That last photo shows his little "luck" horseshoe... which I love.

This morning I had Basil out while Sugar was getting ready for her ride and we noted that his hind end is actually taller than hers so we hoped to snap a photo of the two of them together...well...this is what we got just before she nearly tried to EAT him Poor Basil...your Dam is just D-O-N-E with the whole mommy thing. There wasn't even an ounce of love in the exchange, in fact she lunged at him...I can say with certainty that she hates him! We've heard him calling his pasture mate, Jingles, when she's out and he's got this baby whiny high pitched nicker but Sugar is just SO annoyed by him that she yells at him from across the farm in this very deep pitched, obviously bothered, whinny which was very clearly "SHUT UP!" Anyway, it's so unlike her because she's kind and pleasant and the only horse that Coconut will let get anywhere near her mouth. 99% of the time Sugar befits her name...but not when it comes to Basil! ahh, Motherhood! I guess she's very happy with her Broodmare retirement

look at his mouth in this picture- he is trying to show his baby teeth to his mom! I had always kind of wondered how mothers felt about their babies after they are weaned... Sugar made it VERY clear. He was such a doll when working with Jett today- he is just a very special horse. But then again I am quite certain that he gets his wonderful disposition from his mama, despite this exchange, she is a continuing delight.

While I'm thinking about it, I just thought I'd share a little update on Basil.... He's doing great in his paddock with the run-in shed. We hauled in a couple of small dumptrucks of gravel to give him a chance to stay out of the mud that was certain to come. So far it's working great but back in October I put one of Coconut's rain sheets on him (a larger 66) and it fit ok. Two weeks ago he was several inches out of it in the back so I switched him to a 69 and it looked like he still had at least 3 inches to go. When it got really cold, I pulled out the stall blanket I bought at the tack sale and discovered that for some reason I'd purchased a 78...but it was cold enough that I threw it on under the rain sheet and guess what? It almost fits perfectly :/ there's about 4-5 inches of red hanging out...I'm telling him his boxers are showing but he's probably a good 74-76 now...holy cow this guy keeps growing!!! He's 20 months now & taller than Coconut. He was a very very good boy for the farrier today...who once again told me that this boy's going to amaze me when he grows up...which indicates to me, he's still got some GROWING up to do!!

Happy Anniversary Basil... ONE Year ago Maeve and I became your new Mommies which is good since neither your human or horse mommy was interested in the job any longer. Even though the plan was not to keep you, I'm glad you decided to stay ( yeah, that's the story we're going with this week) You're growing up to be a beautiful boy and I'm looking forward to the exciting new changes in the next year. ...and your human Daddy says Give a kiss to Razzle Dazzle... or As I've to come call you "Razzle MY Basil"...Macho Bar None to some... oh-so-handsome to everyone. You steal our hearts Mister!!! I L-O-V-E you big boy!!!!

Time for a Basil Update!! Basil is still with us...just hanging out and growing up. He's turning into a beautiful Horse...a really BIG Beautiful horse. Last time he had his farrier trim he was estimated at over 15 hands. I'm guessing we're going to stick him here pretty soon to verify but he's maturing nicely. I listed him on Dream Horse but got a lot of half-hearted inquiries and a few crazies too... Since he turned TWO on April 1st, we've been deciding what to do with him....and I say "We" because it feels like a team effort between Maeve and I. I pretty much pay the bills, but Maeve has been spending time working with him. Reality is that neither of us want to commit to a second horse, even 'part time'. We really feel he deserves a full time home/owner. Not wanting a spoiled baby....much less a BIG Spoiled Baby, we decided to get him some REAL training. Kelli Jordan from KCJ Stables agreed to take him on as a full time student which translates to 5 days a week for a session a day. All reports are that he's doing stellar!!! She believes in natural horsemanship and connecting with the horse (I'd say Buck Brannaman, Monty Roberts style) I've seen her work with horses in the past and she's very down to earth and builds a great relationship with the horse. They respond well to her. The goal here is 30 days of ground training and hopefully out to a couple of shows, including the SAFE show, for Halter, Showmanship & in-hand trails. We'd like to see what he can do...and show others what he can do too. Because of other commitments, I haven't been able to watch the first 3 sessions but Maeve caught a couple, one with her camera and took the following photos... I will add, that Maeve's artistic eye comes though, even in her photos. Ooooh, he's just soooo darn handsome He's a head turner when he's in motion Getting down to business business...and art Even at the end of the lesson, there's still connection and trust ...and a Kiss for the good boy! And now for something you'll really like, Basil....

Everyone who has worked with Basil or played a part in his rescue and/or care has entertained the idea of having him as their own. This includes his farrier, fellow boarders and his trainer, Kelli. Kelli couldn't stand it any more and began to realize that his training was going so well that the moment I showed him, I would get my asking price and probably more so she stepped up and made an offer on him....so....I am please to announce that Basil (Macho Bar None) has found his new home! The great part is that he's not moving anywhere So I get all the enjoyment I always have but I get to watch him blossom under Kelli's training and care. I have no doubt he will excel with her and will go farther than I would ever be able to take him. Here's a photo of him in training a few weeks ago. The bad news is that she does not plan to bring him to the SAFE show because he is still in training but when she starts riding him next year, I'll be you'll be seeing him out there at shows...and winning!!! working on the photo..not sure why it's not loading
