Well, let's see here......Luckily I also have air fern horses who truly could almost live on air and be fat. Not a hard keeper among the three of them. I spend 50.00/month on grain, 90.00 month excellent quality local hay, 160.00 every 8 weeks for trims and special shoes for Debit, 40.00/mo on bedding pellets. That adds up to 2160.00 a year for basic feed and bedding, and 960.00 a year for hoof care. Then, there's probably another 250.00 for vet bills. I think I'm one of the lucky ones, because those totals are for three horses!

Leahlady..
I guess it depends upon how many flakes per bale you get. My horse gets 4 flakes a day and a bale lasts roughly 3 days (~12 flakes). So 3 into 30 (days) = 10 bales. I actually think it works out to be more like 8-10 bales. We have average size 2-string bales.
My horse is the same size as yours. I work him ~5 days a week. His weight stays about the same.

Yes, I'm getting the same bale size as drsgjunky...so one bale typically feeds 3-4 horses for one day. Mine get 2 flakes AM, 2 flakes PM as well. At the $15-$17 a bale that it costs around here, that's not cheap...of course the mush eaters are worse. They eat a 50 lb. bag in 2.5 days, and I have two of them. At least Clover has finally consented to eat beet pulp...IF it is properly warm.

ohhh man! my bales must be bigger then - they have 21-24 flakes per bale. They are 2-stringers though... 24 per ton.. so about 80# bales. So about 4# per flake, that is pretty average for orchard/alfalfa mix hay.
I get my hay from Dayville.. paid $13.55/bale last summer. Wish I had enough storage to last through the season.. I'm going to be out of hay in another couple of months.

PK.. Are you sure of these prices? I can't get a Vet call for less than $50. I do all my own injections/treatment after my Vet's diagnosis. I've been doing it for so long he has confidence I won't kill him.

I think PK meant her yearly vet expenses equal out to about $30/month (so $360/year)...which is about accurate assuming no emergencies.
I was in the way up there club until I recently found inexpensive pasture boarding. $150/month, includes hay in winter and strategy if needed (do not need). $45 trim every 6 weeks Plus vet care for the year and misc stuff and I will still average $200-300/month.
Horses are definitely not an inexpensive hobby. I dream about all the money I had before I got Foxy.....
