Phoenix's bloodwork showed him as still a little anemic and protein levels a little low, but this morning he was down but got up by himself this morning. He wasn't thrilled with his grain last night but this morning I tried it without any grass hay pellets in it and he seemed to like it better. He is also getting a little bit of alfalfa every feeding as he eats that better than the grass hay and we need to get some nutrition in him.

He sounds like he is developing an ulcer. Foals who shun grass hay and grain and prefer alfalfa usually are having ulcer symptoms. I would start him on some cemitidine.

All three colts have been on Ranitidine (ulcer meds) 3 times a day since they came here.

Good idea. When they're this starved at such a young age I think ulcers are almost a certainty. Between that and getting the parasite infestation under control, it's not surprising they have poor appetites. Hopefully they'll start to stabilize soon and feel better.

All three colts have been on Ranitidine (ulcer meds) 3 times a day since they came here. Excellent! It is amazing how many young horses have stomach acid problems and most people and even their vets do not recognize it. I have even tried Aloe Vera juice when the antacids did not seem to be working well. It helps some of them. Here is hoping these poor little guys bounce back quickly.

I am praying very hard for this little baby, as for all of them. Thank you all for caring for them.

I think it is outrageous that they used his photo - use of his particular photo misstates the facts of his story. He is not an "excess" horse case as they define it. Jerks.

Indeed - who owns that photo? They might need a note about copyright violations - just to wake them up a little.

Right now its a bay arab next to a water trough (feedlot?), but the image of Phoenix belongs to the photographer and the Seattle Times. Hopefully this petition maker has been informed and changed it for good. I'm glad I didnt see them stealing little Pheonix's photo, there are three things that make me madder than anything: Scum bags that abuse horses (pheonix's situation), people who steal photographers work and use it wherever (completely ignoring copyrights), and horse owners who can look right at slaughter and still honest to god think its a good thing. Witnessing the combination of those three things would have caused an explosion of fury so severe it might have taken out most of Kitsap County. lol Give Pheonix hugs from me! Edited to add: I didnt see the photo they used so I assumed it was his newspaper photo, which would belong to Dean Rutz and the Seattle Times. Any of the other photos of him belong to whoever took them/SAFE. Photos are © the photographer the moment you click the shutter, you dont have to send them into the copyright office (although it does help).

It's funny, given the internet and all, I'm so used to taking a photo and using it (ie, I needed a photo of calla lilies for something so I grabbed from google image, edited size and it's now on my wedding website - only because their standard pictures were not my taste). You tend to forget that things are still copyrighted! I guess I'll need to contact Dean and ask his permission to use the photo in the future. (Planning on wedding favor being SAFE donation and was going to make a little card with his photo saying thanks - will definitely get his permission first though.)
I feel a little guilty now :X
Edit: I emailed him.

I didnt mean to guilt trip you gupgup! I'd had to much caffeine/sugar and was on the loose lol Usually personal use stuff is fine. I think the kind of use you had in mind falls under fair use laws (I'd have to check) but its always nice to ask first Its really the people that take the image without permission and sell it, like on products etc, or take the image and use it completely out of context, like in this case, that really get my goat.

Phoenix is doing great and is actually the stronger one compared to Sinatra. It has been over 2 weeks since he has needed help up now. Both are done with their ulcer medication today. Phoenix is still a bit more shy then Sinatra and pretty sure he doesn't want to be caught, which isn't a big deal when it is time to go out from his stall but when he has to come in at night he can be a pill. Last night I just gave up trying to catch him with Sinatra and took Sinatra in without him and went back to get him. Boy, are those two ever bonded! Phoenix was screaming and running back and forth, so I would say he is feeling better! Eventually he figured out though that if he wanted back with his "brother" then he would have to let me catch him. Silly boy!
