I just joined today after reading about your show on Fugly Horse of The Day... I used to live in the Bridle Trails area.. BT should have poles, a gate, a bridge etc... Since this is a horse show What rule book are you going to use as a guide ?

I use the official SAFE Benefit Horse Show trail judge rule book. ;D Oh yeah, and I'm the judge On a more serious note, my quick searching states that an open horse show can use whatever course they so choose for their trail course. That, in fact, open horse show trails courses can get quite creative because they are not required to use any specific set of rules. Good thing. I already designed the course. ;D

Open shows cannot just use anything if they are rated... USEF.4-H Washington State Horseman, and all of the breed rule books ( AQHA, APHA, ApHC etc ) do have specs on what the measurements of walk. jog and lope overs . Just like setting a hunter or jumper course the striding must be correct And what can and cannot be used. Like live animals... You do not want to set your exhibitors up to fail by setting a obstacle with the wrong measurements or get hurt and putting a live goat ( or anything live) has a huge possbilty of causing a horse to spook and some one falling off www.usef.org if you go the western section it will give you some pretty standard guide lines Also the "guru" of trail Tim Kimura ( he designs the trail courses for the AQHA World Show, Sun Circuit etc) has a web site www.timkimura.com www.aqha.com www.appaloosa.com www.apha.com You will most likely get more people to come to your show if you have what is considered "standard" in a trail course in show setting I know that the huge trail horse show held in Eugene Oregon has some pretty impressive obstacles but I can tell you that they are layed out with measurements and they too have had to make changes due to safety concerns

Chipgirl, Our show is not rated, nor is it affiliated with any horse-related governing bodies. It's a "fun" show.
The trails course will be designed by and judged by Whitewolf. I am going to suggest that she reviews the Western section of the USEF rule book for guidelines in terms of obstacle heights and distances. The specific use of goats on the course was very well received last year, even if it was a difficult obstacle for some riders to deal with. The USEF rule book recommends avoiding the use of exotic animals, and I don't believe that a goat would be considered exotic. The rule book does state that the trails course should replicate situations that could be encountered on a trail ride, and certainly the presence of small livestock falls under that category. I guess it would be more realistic if we had deer, but maybe the goats can be persuaded to wear fake antlers for the day.

With all due respect USEF does not allow animals of any kind per the 2008 rule book WS125.12. Unacceptable obstacles : a. animals b. Hides I am glad to see that you are going to consult the current year rule book .. Very interesting reading And also since this is been held at a State Park there also maybe other rules about animals too So you might want to see what your contract says or ask Ranger Mary I hope your show is a sucess and I just found out that I will unable to attend ( darn because I lived there for 42 years and love riding there at BT)

I'm sure the goats are allowed, as long as they are contained (they will be) and cleaned up after (they will be). I can ask Mary if anyone thinks we need too, as I ride by and see her on a regular basis!
With all due respect, I am really excited for the goats, and could care less about USEF regulations at a fun show!!

Trillium is brining her goats. They were a hit last year and totally contained, so they won't be running wildly.

Well, I have two very friendly goats that are currently living with horses that I could bring, if Trillium wants to take them home afterward (hint, hint) They even look like female deer.

LOL- I better get working on that fence, and my hubby too. I will see what I can work out. I looked up your breed of goat and they are cute. By the way, my goats do have antlers (ahhhm, horns), does that count? I am glad we are having a fun show. There are plenty of rule ladden shows, I guess we are just "unruly"

You tell him that you are bringing two goats with you, but he doesn't see which ones. Then you return with two goats that you told him you already had, so he doesn't know they weren't originally your goats. See how devious I am? ;D

Chipgirl, Our show is not rated, nor is it affiliated with any horse-related governing bodies. It's a "fun" show. On top of this, I also want to disclose right now that the lead line children do not go past the live animals nor do they go through any part that could make their pony or horse spook. Lead line children only do about half the course. Also, anyone not comfortable with taking their horse through any part of the course that I have designed can skip that obstacle. You simply will not get the points for that part of the course, but I am happy to fairly judge the remaining obstacles that you complete. We absolutely have goats. As everyone else said, the goats are contained. They do not run freely through the arena. They sit in a small pen and munch their hay all day long. Also, the goats were a very well-received part of the course last year. It was the part that I got the most comments on, and they were all good comments. Not one person had a bad thing to say about the goats, and anyone who had a horse who had not been around goats was pleasantly surprised at their horse's reaction. The goats do not jump out from behind anything. They are very visible to the horse.

OK, I still need a water box, a mounting block, and a mailbox that will stand upright on its own. Does anyone happen to have these things laying around? The less things I have to make/find here and cart across the state, the better for me.
eta: Has anyone here made it to the venue yet? It would help me a lot to know if these are things they will have on site. I really need to know what they already have there.
