Hey everyone! The SAFE board of directors would like to take a moment to give everyone an overview of what is going on within our organization and some of our ideas on how to move things forward. We have had some very satisfying results lately (Emerald Downs rehoming efforts, Desert Spark's rescue, and finding forever homes for some of our fosters to name a few) and we have some really exciting plans for what our next steps will be.
But first, we'd like to thank each and every one of you for all your support and participation here. We quite literally could not do it without you!
And now...drumroll please...here is where we find ourselves and where we'd like to go...
1. We plan on attending a local auction in the near future. If we encounter a situation in which there is a horse at risk of ending up with the meat man, we will make sure we either push the bid up over the meat price or purchase the horse to rehome as a SAFE horse.
2. Honeycutt will be going into training soon (we'll announce the trainer as soon as we have solidified the plans). Once he graduates from his training schedule, we hope to have him in a forever home ASAP.
3. Amigo is going to be evaluated to see if DSLD is the cause of his dropped pasterns. Once we find out what the situation is with him physically, we can then determine whether we continue his training with Juliane Hanley at Serenity Training or try to find him a forever home as a pasture pal. We are also still actively working on finding Regala a home as well.
3. Trey is currently in a new foster home with averyscrazy4horses, but we are planning on putting him into training after we have found Honeycutt a new home (or the spring, whichever comes first )
4. Vivian is on the waiting list for training with Juliane. Once Benedetto is weaned, she will go into training and hopefully that will help us find her a forever home as well.
5. We are discussing the right time of year to hold another clinic. Also, we're debating whether it should be another groundwork clinic or a riding clinic, or both!
6. Our hunt for foster homes continues, so if anyone out there would like to be a foster, or knows of someone who could foster any of our horses, please let us know. The more space we have, the more we can take on (provided we have the funds).
7. Emerald Downs and Portland Meadows race horse rehoming project: we are continuing to work on our relationships with the backside of both tracks so that we can continue to list TB's who need to come off the track and find non racing homes.
8. We are working on posting a generic contract and reference check sheet that people can use when giving their horses away. It would be an instruction sheet on how to protect the horse that they are giving away. These documents could be put together in an email to alert them to the potential dangers of giving a horse away and to educate them on how to safely place them with a contract and reference checks.
9. SAFE is now registered as a non profit corporation in the state of Washington (thank you Jaybird). This is step one towards getting our 501(c)3 status with the IRS. There are many more steps that we are in the process of tackling (articles of incorporation, bylaws, etc) and we'll keep you all updated on how we're doing. We are hoping for many more opportunities to open up for us once we do get our 501(c)3 status official.
10. A huge thank you goes out to slewgirl who held a charity auction on behalf of SAFE and we intend to put the proceeds right back into saving more horses! We can't tell you slewgirl how much this means to us and we can't thank you enough!!
So, that's where the board sees SAFE going in the near future. Of course, we are always open to new ideas and new opportunities, so please contact one of us if you think there is something out there that we should know about. We LOVE participation in our endeavours! And if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask, either in this thread or one on one with one of us via PM's.
Here's to the future...and we hope you'll all join us for the ride:
Jaime, Bonnie, Connie, Peri, Jenny, and Melanie
