Very cute photos - I love the sniffing noses one. And of course he wouldn't want the extra special soft and cozy item you bought him - silly horse.

I love this horse!!!! He reminds me so much of the wonderful, bay arabian gelding that taught me to ride.

I remember meeting him in Elma, he's come a long way in 3 years! Love your Christmas photos, too, especially the sepia-toned one!
Thanks for posting about him (and your mare, too, she's a lucky girl)

Well, I don't really have any updates on Bin other than he continues to look fabulous and impress everyone with his age. I have got to get my camera together and take some photos, but it's been pretty much non-stop rain here and I haven't been doing hardly any riding. Pretty much stall cleaning, feeding lunch, and setting up the rest of their meals, with lunging and turn out takes about all of the time I have right now. Plus all I want to do is hit the trail lately...
Anyway, he's doing just fine, and was showing off for everyone in the arena yesterday when I turned him loose to burn off some energy. ;D

I need to get out there with my camera. Today. Seriously! I have become terrible about photo documenting...I see the horses every day so I don't notice changes, and need to be taking pictures. Well, Ben is just a couple months away from his 24th birthday. I see a few changes in him, but he pretty much looks and acts like a young thing all the time. His back is beginning to lose some of the definition that it had last year, but I attribute that as much to me not having time to ride as to his old age. He is still king supreme. He's always had this "Take care of me, I'm worth it" attitude. He is not a dog-type of horse...he doesn't come when you call, and he wants to be talked to like a grown up. I love that about him. We did get out on the trail the other day...he is such a turd/such a blast to ride. He will never be a beginner's horse. His canter is still balanced and beautiful. I'm so excited to announce that both Ben and Chevelle will be moving out to my friend/old trainer's property at the end of the month! I've heard Ben's joints creaking a little bit lately (for the first time), and I feel that maximum turn-out will keep the arthritis away as long as possible. At her place he'll get all the turn out he could ever want, and a stall for winter. I think it should be just perfect for him. Plus I can't wait to see him fatten up on pasture. He's always been a picky eater, and that should help him. He had his teeth floated and one pulled back in February (they weren't bad, but I was glad to get that loose tooth out of there). He just has the "ONLY $14/bale hay?!" attitude. Nothing is ever good enough. ;D I will post pictures of him soon! He's shedding out and looking better and better every day.

Ben was my steady-eddy on Chevelle's first trail ride a while ago. My friend Corissa rode him and while she can be a little "too nice" sometimes (I NEVER let him eat on the trail! ;D ). They were great together and made Chev's first trail experience a great one. Isn't he looking super? He turned 24 this summer. Here he is getting hosed off afterwards...it was a VERY hot day: ETA: Looking at that last picture of him, no one could convince me that horse is a day over 5. ;D ( Very proud to be Ben's mom)

Here's a photo I took of Ben today in his pasture at my friend Marian's place. I took it with my camera phone, so it's not the best quality. And here's one from late June. The three in their pasture: Chev on the left, Ben in the middle and my friend's Warmblood Makani on the right:

Well, Ben was a champ for his vet exam two Saturdays ago. He jumped right in the trailer to go (VERY unusual for him...maybe he's more bored standing around all day than I thought) and trailered very well the 15 minutes to the vet clinic.
He got a thorough exam, teeth checking, fecal float, and chem panel/CBC bloodwork done (which I processed myself at the lab). The vet said everything looks excellent--he had absolutely NO worms/ova in his poops at all (much to the vet's surprise! Most horses carry at least a few), so I guess my deworming program is working well. The vet felt that probably the combined energy usage of being outside all the time and having to keep up with the youngins was contributing to some of the ribbiness, and suggested I slowly start increasing his grain. He had been getting about two pounds of senior grain and one pound of ricebran per day, divided into two meals, along with 6 flakes of hay. So I've been working on that. No complaints from Ben so far, although he hasn't picked up the weight yet.
The vet also tactfully suggested "forced exercise". I know, I know! He looked fabulous when I was riding him 30 minutes every day. Lately (for the past 5 months or so) I just haven't had the time. He is bored though, and needs to build the muscle before he really hits old age. So I am making more of an effort to get him the exercise he (and I) need. We had a very good session on Sunday.
So he is doing well, not as fat as I'd like going into winter. Hopefully we'll have this resolved soon. I'm going to go and read the section of the boards on fattening up old horses for the upteenth time. ;D
