Those of you that are on the CBER BB may be familiar with the beginning of this story. About three weeks ago it was posted that there was a young paint stud in Lebanon, OR in danger of being shot if he was not removed from the property he was on. Heidigrex and I went there to see what could be done. She went up one day, they had no luck with catching him, so I went up with her the next day.
We found out that the horse had actually showed up Trina's house and was trying to get in their fence, so they took the fence down and let him in so he wouldn't get hurt. They didn't realize he was a stud, and they have two mares. Come to find out, the horse came from a group of about 100 horses that were seized due to starvation, etc. These horses had lived for years on about 600 acres of timber, with no human contact, just inbreeding and taking care of themselves. The people in charge of the rescue came out when they found out this horse had showed up at Trina's house, and gave her a bill of sale. Soon after that, she realized he was a stud when he caught him and one of her mares doing you know what
That is where the dilemma began. Trina did not want the horse there because she doesn't really want any babies. She can't giver her mares the shot to abort within the timeframe with him still there, because it would be a total waste, so she starts calling around about getting someone to come catch him. Somehow, she came in contact with one of CBER's volunteers Now, she had never actually stated they were going to shoot the horse, just that one of her neighbors had recomended it.
Heidigrex and I along with Trina and all of our SO's spent alot of time and energy trying to catch this horse to no avail. Finally, last night they got him in the stall, and when he found a hole, he went over the gate, and was gone again.
Trina's husband called Heidi today and told her to forget it. They had decided that the only option they had was to shoot him. They made arrangements for a backhoe to come tomorrow to bury him.
Well, Trina's husband didn't really want to do that, so he spent all day and got Boogie in the stall again. This time he took his dog kennel sides, and attached them to the gates, so Boogie couldn't go over the top again, then he got the panels set up so that we could try to get him in the trailer. Well, it wasn't easy, and there were a few times I wondered if he was going to take someone out, but we got him loaded and he is off to live with Heidi. He will be gentled, gelded, and becaome Heidi's new best friend.
Trina was crying when we got him in the trailer. She was so happy that he was going to have a chance. She just couldn't offer it to him.
I just wanted to share this story with you guys. I have been relieved all evening. We saved the horse, and the people that originally saved him, from a situation none of them wanted to be in. Congratulations to Heidi on her wonderful new addition to her family!
(Sorry to be so long winded)
