I just wanted to let everyone know that Casper has finally left for his new home in Canada. He was supposed to leave on Friday but the transporter could not make it in time. I was keeping Casper in my arena for the last week so he could be near my horses. On Saturday with the rain and low temperatures me and my husband decided to bring him into the barn. He got the deluxe 10'x20' stall filled with shavings and a nice warm blanket until he dried off. When I came in the barn on Sunday morning I swear that mule had a smile on his face ;D On Sunday I put my colt Whiskey in with him since he is such an sweetie and does not pick on other horses. Casper liked Whiskey so much that he was following him everywhere he went! I spent the afternoon brushing him and giving him treats. This morning when I went to feed them he was laying down in the paddock in the sand snoozing. I gave him his grain while he was laying down.....basically he got his breakfast in bed!! He finally came in for his carrots and good bye kisses. My husband called this morning and the hauler came and got him. For the first time he was hesitant to load into the trailer. My husband also said that my baby Whiskey is still calling for him We will miss him so much but he is going to a really good home

Aww...poor Casper. I have had the same problem with other CBER horses - they load great getting off the feedlot, but once in a secure place don't want to leave. Thank you for taking such good care of him and hopefully his new owner will take over where you left off giving him lots of love!

Sounds like he was the perfect house - er, barn - guest. Must have made you smile when you saw him in the morning.

Sorry, most important is THANK YOU diamond for taking such great care while he was with you. Drena and I had a hard time leaving him. Although he seemed to smile when he saw all the goodies you left for him to eat.

There was something very special about that old mule....not sure what it was but he makes people fall in love with him instantly! I think that he will have a very loving home with Jane. I told her that if she ever wanted to get rid of him to call me and I would take him in a heartbeat I am going to call her this weekend because she is flying to Canada from LA where she lives to see him. Geez.... I sure do miss that darn mule No need to thank me I was so glad to have him for the short time that I did

I think for me it was that he was just so sad...you could see it in his eyes. I really felt better about him the last days that he was here because he was so happy!!

Thanks to FalseImpression we have an update on Casper!!
Here is the update from his caretaker:
Casper is doing very well. When he first arrived, I was away working, so he met my roommate first for 3 days (she just does basic feed, water, check for injuries). He was just getting used to her when I came back. The poor little guy was just so confused - who the heck was he supposed to be used to? (CBER, then you guys, then my roommate, then me!!) After a couple days he settled and I was able to approach him with his food without him trotting out of his stall. Now he is quite sweet and comes up for treats. He has been very good about catching, leading, picking out feet etc. He is quite a character though - once he decided to go "explore the barn" (it's a very large dairy barn) while I was mucking out. He didn't bother waiting until I left a gap in the doorway; he just climbed over the wheelbarrow. First the ears & front legs, then the back legs. It was pretty funny. I went to catch him (he couldn't really escape), thinking he would be fuddled from the wheelbarrow, but no, he just acted like, "OK, I'm all done checking this place out, I guess it's time to go back in my stall."
There was a lot of construction going on here recently and now he has a nice 30 x 60 paddock all his own beside my horse Moose. (No, that is not a "Canadian invasion" joke. We crazy Canadians just have horses named Moose! ) I tried putting them together which they liked at first but then Moose was too rough with him. So right now he is in a 20X16 stall with attached run, or his paddock. And heck, he is a lot cleaner in his stall than darn Moose! He is growing on me, especially with his funny nose - it's just so big!! But he is so gentle when I feed him treats that it's really very cute.
