It took about an hour today, but I was able to untangle her mess of a mane and Allison braided it (it is VERY thick!) to keep it from getting tangled again. Julie, another volunteer, combed out her thick tail and we trimmed it to keep her from stepping on it. She got a good grooming and most of the mud removed from her legs. All of them have such caked on muck all over their bodies, the worst on their legs, that it is very hard to remove without taking the hair with it. We were able to use a soft curry to break the chunks up and get most of it off but it is going to take several more grooming sessions. They are a mess!

Thankfully you guys are so awesome at bringing along these skinny pregnant mares, this mare got very lucky to have landed where she did.

I think if there is anyone capable of understanding this, the people at SAFE will. There is something about this horse that has captured my attention. I keep finding myself coming back to look at her pictures. I am highly tempted to drive all the way over to Monroe to help with her beauty treatment!

I keep finding myself coming back to look at her pictures. I am highly tempted to drive all the way over to Monroe to help with her beauty treatment! ...may I tempt you even more by saying that she's got that captivating quality in person too. It makes you want to be around her...like a teddy bear. She is definately "Large & in Charge!" and was keeping tabs on everyone else in the arena & moving in for what she thought was her share (food, love, grooming, etc...) she's not shy but not disrepectful to humans as far I could tell. I liked being up close & felt comfortable with her. She's pretty despite her neglect. The furry coat & round belly look deceiving at first but then you touch her and feel the sharpness of, say, her shoulder or rib bones and then it hits you how much she's suffered.

I think it's the soulful look in her eyes. She reminds me very much of the way Mercedes looked when I first took her home, but Mercedes had the good fortune of having her feet in good condition. She just looks like she needs her own person!

She really is pretty. I hope the stud was a TB. Even unplanned, it could be a nice baby. My vet thinks the temperament comes mainly from the mare, so it will likely have a nice temperament to boot. Thank goodness that she's being taken care of now so the baby doesn't suffer from starvation before it's even born. Pam

If she has a colt, he must be named Sampson I second that! So, Jaime...any work days planned coming up? ;D I am SO guilty of looking at this horse several times a day. I can't explain it, but I feel like I HAVE to meet her!
